IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Today, many individuals argue that the environmental issues are caused by the loss of some particular species of animals and plants, while others argue that there are other considerable environmental issues. This essay will discuss both prspectives before explaining why I believe that there are more important environmental peoblems except the loss of animals and plants.
On the one hand, it is believed that the main reason of all the ecological problems is due to extinct animals and plants. The primary reason is that deforestation hurts many habitat that destroy the natural food chain. For example, cutting trees to build modern infrastructure and housing schems disturbs many habitat of birds and small animals. Recently, a cheetah was seen on the roads of margalla hill, which gave the evidence of lost homes of the wild animals. Furthermore, deforestation is the cause of high temperature. Deceasing number of trees, lead to high carbon dioxide in the atmosphare causing high temperature which harm existing crops and animals. Although dying of animals and plants cause several environmental problems, there are some other serious issues on the planet.
On the other hand, others argue that there are many other important ecological issue which we are facing tooday. The issues like global warming, pollution, rising sea level, etc. One significent reason is that problems other than extinct species, can be considered worse for the environment. For example, leading disease in humans like breathing issues are caused by pollution, rising the high healthcare expense. Moreover, high carbon emissions destroyed environment and melted glaciers in the recent year.
In conclusion, I believe that despite loss of many species of animals and plants, other environmnetal problems are more important to be considered by the governments and other private NGOs. Considering other problems will help to analysis the issue in detail and it can draft implementable solutions for the public.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state a clear opinion: you argue that environmental problems beyond species loss deserve greater attention. The discussion of habitat destruction, food chains and the cheetah sighting is relevant, while the second view includes pollution, health effects and climate change. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The first paragraph focuses largely on deforestation and its effects, rather than explaining directly why the loss of particular species is considered the main problem. The opposing view also lists issues without comparing their scale or explaining why they are more important. Develop each central claim with a clearer cause-and-effect explanation and a specific example, then connect that evidence explicitly to your position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow, and the final paragraph restates your position. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, links between ideas can feel mechanical, and some references are unclear—for example, “The issues like global warming, pollution, rising sea level” is a fragment rather than a fully connected explanation. The relationship between deforestation, species loss and higher temperatures could also be made more explicit. Use cohesive links to show cause, contrast and consequence, rather than relying mainly on paragraph-opening phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of environmental vocabulary, including “natural food chain,” “carbon emissions,” “glaciers” and “habitat,” which helps communicate the topic. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “implementable solutions.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “prspectives,” “peoblems,” “significent” and “environmnetal.” Some combinations are also unnatural or unclear, such as “the main reason of all the ecological problems is due to extinct animals and plants” and “rising the high healthcare expense.” These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the main argument, but they limit fluency and accuracy. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for discussing environmental causes and effects.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including a relative clause in “which gave the evidence” and a concessive clause beginning “Although.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. For example, “many habitat” needs plural agreement, and “Deceasing number of trees, lead” has problems with the subject and verb structure. The sentence “The issues like global warming, pollution, rising sea level, etc.” is incomplete, while “which harm existing crops and animals” does not agree with the singular subject “high temperature.” Work on complete sentence construction, subject–verb agreement, articles and plural forms. Varying sentence patterns is useful, but ensure each complex sentence is controlled and punctuated clearly.
