IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that loss of diversity is the main concern for our ecosystem. It is because it can disturb the food chain. While others believe that there are many other issues related to the environment, such as ozone depletion and global warming. I agree that concerns like damage to ozone and rise in temperature should also be considered detrimental as these kind of problems can eventually cause the loss of species. This essay will examine the reasons for both views before suggesting my own perspective.

One of the major reasons for people who support the former point is food chain disturbance. This can be explained by that species loss can create food shortage for seveal organisms including human. In addition, one specie is a prey for other. If one specie do not find enough food, it will become endangered and can vanish from the world, creating problems for other species. Moreover, every organism performs its function in sustaining the environment. For instance, microorganisms are natural decomposers, keeping the environment clean.

From my perspective, there are many other essential issues, such as ozone depletion and global warming. It is because ozone damage cause UV rays to directly reach the Earth, which can cause several diseases, such as skin cancer. Another major factor is that it can cause unusual temperature increase, which can be problematic for plants and other organisms. To illustrate this, many crops require optimum temperature to grow, creating food shortage. Consequently, these issues can eventually create loss of several species.

To conclude, although loss of diversity can be terrible for environment. I do not find it fully convincing because issues like cancers and crops damage should be equally addressed. Governments should take equal responsibility of solving these problems too as species can also be affected due to the ozone damage and temperature rise.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear position: you recognise species loss as serious, but argue that ozone depletion and rising temperatures also deserve attention. The explanation of food-chain disruption and the role of decomposers is relevant, while the links from ozone damage to UV exposure and from temperature changes to crop problems support your view. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the case for species loss relies mainly on a general food-chain explanation, and the conclusion repeats your position rather than adding a developed comparison of which problems are most urgent. Some claims, such as ozone damage causing unusual temperature increases, would benefit from clearer explanation. Develop each main reason with a specific example and make the comparison between the views more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two perspectives, and a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “In addition,” “Moreover,” and “Consequently” help show how ideas relate. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and also shows some flexibility in connecting points. At times, however, the links feel mechanical or the reference is unclear. For example, “It is because” begins explanations repeatedly, and “it” in “Another major factor is that it can cause unusual temperature increase” does not clearly identify whether you mean ozone depletion or global warming. Use more varied transitions and repeat the key noun when a pronoun could have more than one possible reference.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “food chain,” “ozone depletion,” “UV rays,” “decomposers,” and “optimum temperature.” These terms make the environmental discussion clear, and phrases such as “loss of diversity” and “sustain the environment” show attempts to use more specific language. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “one specie,” “food shortage for several organisms,” and “cancers and crops damage” do not sound natural in context. There are also spelling errors such as “seveal.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision. Check plural forms and common collocations, and choose terms that express the intended relationship accurately, such as “species decline” or “crop damage.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “If one specie do not find enough food” and a relative clause in “microorganisms are natural decomposers, keeping the environment clean.” Meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Subject–verb agreement is incorrect in “ozone damage cause” and “one specie do not”; articles and plurals are also problematic in “an optimum temperature” and “one specie.” The opening fragment, “While others believe…,” is not a complete sentence, and the conclusion’s “although” clause is separated from the main clause by a full stop. Review agreement, sentence boundaries, and clause punctuation, while continuing to practise complex sentence forms.
