IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is mostly believed that the major problem in present enviroment is the decrease in particular species of flora and fauna although some think that other environmental problems are more significant. This essay tells that the problems in the environment like the increase of global warming and greenhouse gases is more problematic despite the fact that the endangering of plants and animals is alarming.
Today, a large number of plants and animals are on the verge of extinction that directly impacts the Earth's ecosystem. The loss of these species is alarming as the it has become uncontrollable. Although these plants and animals are of higher value to the environment, the techniques involving preservation and conservations of them can be implemented to prevent their radical decrease. It is therefore disagreed that the reduction in number of these living things is the primary problem to the enviroment. For example, conservation areas are constructed globally to protect different endangered species.
The rise of global warming and its affects are unnoticeable these days. Different natural beings including the animals and plants are being negatively impacted due to the increase in some green house gases like CFCs. This essay agrees that today the problems like the global warming, carbon emission and so on are of utmost impact to the environment in the present days. For example, the recent outburst of glacier lake flood in Bhotekoshi river of Nepal impacted tens of thousands of Nepalese who were living on the river banks.
In conclusion, despite the loss of specific species of plants and animals impact the ecosystems of the Earth, the other problems including the global warming are impacting the environment more and are of greater concern in today's world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and make your position clear: you acknowledge that species loss harms ecosystems, but argue that global warming and related problems are more serious. The examples of conservation areas and the glacier-lake flood in Nepal help make the discussion relevant. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The first paragraph about species loss mainly asserts that conservation can prevent decline, without explaining how effective this is or why it makes species loss less urgent. The discussion of broader environmental problems also focuses largely on global warming, while carbon emissions are mentioned but not explained. Develop the reasoning behind each comparison and connect the Nepal example more explicitly to the wider environmental threat.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs discuss the competing concerns, and a conclusion restates your position. This logical arrangement makes the argument easy to follow, and transitions such as “Although,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships between ideas. To strengthen progression further, make the link between claims and evidence more explicit. For instance, the conservation-area example illustrates protection efforts, but the paragraph does not clearly show why this means species loss is less important than other problems. Some linking phrases, such as “This essay agrees,” sound formulaic; a more direct transition would make the cohesion less mechanical. Clarify references such as “these problems” by naming the specific issue.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “flora and fauna,” “ecosystem,” “extinction,” “conservation,” and “carbon emission.” These terms allow you to discuss environmental concerns clearly, and some less common choices show an effort to be precise. However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce naturalness: “present enviroment,” “the endangering of plants,” “green house gases,” and “outburst of glacier lake flood” are awkward or inaccurate. “Unnoticeable” also does not express the intended idea that global warming’s effects are increasingly evident. Aim for standard environmental collocations and check spelling and word forms; this will make your argument more fluent and precise without requiring more complex vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession clause beginning “Although” and a relative clause in “who were living on the river banks.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the overall argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In the opening, “the increase of global warming and greenhouse gases is” has an unclear compound subject and agreement; “the increase in global warming and greenhouse-gas emissions is” would be clearer. In “the loss of these species is alarming as the it has become uncontrollable,” the article is duplicated and the pronoun reference is unclear. The conclusion also needs a plural verb: “the loss … impacts.” Review articles, agreement, and sentence clarity while retaining your varied structures.
