IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Environmental concerns are the major reason of future catastrophism which include human's destruction. Many people believe that distinction of many plants and animals are the major reason behind environmental destruction. While others argue that there are even more significant issues that harms the nature. This essay will discuss both the perspective before coming to my notion in the upcoming paragraphs.
To commence with, there are several problems which takes place due to loss of plants species. The major problem is the imbalance in the ecosystem. As we know every species in the nature depend on other species for their energy source. For instance, carnivorous animals depend on herbivorous animal for their food, while herbivorous animals need to depend on plants for the energy to live. Similarly, different species are dependent on other species for their food source. Hence, distinction of even a single species can ruins the whole food chain, which ultimately cause severe consequence to environment.
On the flipside, there are still other factor that can destroy mother nature. The primary cause of destruction is the pollution. To elaborate, mother earth is terribly suffering from several types of pollutions such as air pollution, cause by industries, automotives and forest fires. Other types of pollution includes noise pollution, soil pollution, water pollution. The harmful gases release by industries and due to burning of fuels used in cars and other transport vehicles, as well as the gases from refrigerators and air conditioner release carbon emission which eventually leads to global warming. Such ramifications hold more potential to destroy nature.
To encapsulate, although elimination of species can be a major concern to environment as the ecosystem depends upon each other, I opine that other environmental problems are more significant because pollution caused by humans directly or indirectly can harm nature to great extent.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and make your own position clear: you explain how species loss can disrupt food chains, then argue that pollution is the more serious threat. The food-chain example supports the first view, while the discussion of emissions and global warming supports the second. This covers the task well, and your conclusion is consistent with the argument. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the species-loss paragraph focuses mainly on food sources, while the pollution paragraph lists several forms of pollution but gives limited explanation of their wider effects. To strengthen the response, develop the consequences of biodiversity loss further and add a specific example or clearer comparison showing why pollution is more significant overall.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear overall progression: an introduction presents the debate, separate body paragraphs discuss each view, and the conclusion states your opinion. Linking expressions such as “For instance,” “To elaborate,” and “To encapsulate” help readers follow the argument, and the central position remains consistent. Some transitions feel formulaic, however, particularly “This essay will discuss both the perspective before coming to my notion in the upcoming paragraphs.” There are also places where connections between ideas could be more precise; for example, the move from listing pollution types to carbon emissions would benefit from clearer grouping. Use fewer stock phrases and make links between cause, consequence, and comparison more explicit to make cohesion more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “imbalance in the ecosystem,” “food chain,” “carbon emission,” and “global warming.” These terms make the subject clear, and attempts at more formal language such as “ramifications” show some ambition. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “future catastrophism,” “distinction of many plants and animals,” and “mother earth is terribly suffering.” “Environmental destruction” and “pollution” are also repeated without much variation. Choose precise terms such as “extinction,” “biodiversity loss,” and “environmental degradation,” and check collocations before using less familiar expressions. This would improve precision while retaining the relevant range already present.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional and cause-and-effect relationships, as in “Hence, distinction of even a single species can ruins the whole food chain.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make sentences awkward. Examples include subject–verb agreement in “other factor that can destroy” and “pollution … that harms,” verb form in “can ruins,” and plural agreement in “Other types of pollution includes.” Articles and sentence construction also need attention, as in “depend on other species for their energy source.” Practise checking each sentence’s subject and verb, and review singular/plural forms and articles. More accurate control of these patterns would make your complex ideas easier to read.
