IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people augue that, extinction of some specefic trees and animals are the main environmental challange, while others believe that, we have other challenges that effects the environment, considered as more important. The essay will explain both views and in my opinion, pollution should be considered as the main problem, which harms the environment.
On the one hand, extinction of particular spcies is a major problem for the nature. this is because, the ecological balance is harmed by losing specefic plants or animals. for example, mammoths are extincted from the world, which cause disrupted situation in the polar areas because mammoths provided shelter for many species, who were dependent on a mammoth. As a result, this loss of a animal caused stuggle for many species. Moreover, the cycle of ecology loses its' stability if any animal is extincted, as the whole cycle suffers, which unstables the ecological balance. As a result envioronment suffers significantly by this diversity.
On the other hand, civilization and industrialization are causing pollutions like noise pollution, air pollution, soil erossion, water pollution, which are challenging for the environment, as it causes destructive natural calamities, results in many circumstances like deaths and loss of houses. For example, greenhouse gas, which is produced by industries is destroying the ozone layer and results in global warming. As a result, sea level is rising significantly, which will cause tsunami in future and many land areas will be swollen by the ocean. Moreover, because of deforestation, prtection by trees from environmental calimities like tornado or hurricane is lost and causes destruction in the land areas, which was not seen earlier.
In conclusion, although lossing particaular species of trees and livinghoods have significant impacts on environment, as it effects the bioloigical diversity, pollution is a major problem, that is hurting the nature constantly, which may result in more loss.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state a clear opinion: the introduction identifies species loss and other environmental problems, then says pollution is the main concern. The two body paragraphs are relevant, and examples such as industrial greenhouse-gas emissions and deforestation help explain your position. This meets the task well overall. However, some support is less fully developed or unclear. The claim that mammoths provided shelter for polar species is not explained or convincingly connected to current biodiversity loss, and the prediction that rising sea levels will cause tsunamis is not accurate. Develop the comparison more directly by explaining why pollution has wider or more immediate effects than species loss, and use precise, reliable examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The progression from species loss to pollution is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the organisation clear. This is a coherent arrangement, though some linking is mechanical or repetitive: “As a result” appears several times, and “Moreover” is used to add points without always showing how they relate to the main claim. Some references are also unclear, such as “this diversity” and “which was not seen earlier.” Use more precise links between cause and consequence, and make pronouns refer unmistakably to a specific idea.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt vocabulary suited to the topic, including “ecological balance,” “industrialization,” “greenhouse gas,” and “biological diversity.” These choices show some range beyond basic environmental terms. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause: “extincted,” “erossion,” “calimities,” and “livinghoods” are inaccurate, while “pollutions” and “unstables” are not natural forms in these contexts. Some collocations are also imprecise, such as “the cycle of ecology” and “land areas will be swollen by the ocean.” Build accuracy by checking word forms and spelling, and learn environmental terms in common combinations—for example, “species become extinct,” “the ecological cycle,” and “land is submerged.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “because,” “which,” and “if,” and the overall meaning is generally understandable. Some sentence patterns are effective, such as “This is because the ecological balance is harmed…” However, there are recurring grammatical errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “challenges that effects” should use a plural verb, and “a animal” needs the correct article. The sentence beginning “For example, greenhouse gas…” does not clearly connect its subject and verb to the preceding point, while several long sentences combine multiple consequences without clear grammatical control. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and clause boundaries, then proofread punctuation and sentence endings.
