IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In today's rapidly changing world, environmental problems are a matter of considerable debate. Some people argue that major enviromental probelm nowadays is the reduction in the particular plants and animals species. While others believe that other environmental probelms are more significant. In this essay I will discuss both points of views before giving my opinion that why i think other environmental issues are more important.
One of the primary reasons some people believe that the loss of particular species of plants and animals is the main problem is because it leads to endangerment of very important species which are beneficial for humans. For instance, Polar Bears are on risk and they are very important for scientists to study heart diseases in humans and bone density. Loss of particular edible plant species can cause major setback for food industry. For instance, Tomatoes are used in every dish and loss of its species can disturb its supply system in whole world.
On the other hand, there are other important environmental issues who needs our immediate attention such as pollution and deforestation. This is because breathing in polluted air and drinking contaminated water cause many health complications. For instance, Lahore is considered second most polluted city in the world and living there is not safe for health. Deforestation leads to distruction of habitat of many species and increases the risk of global warming, which is another major environmental issues. Therefore, I believe we should focus on these envrionemntal issues which are the biggest thread to human survival.
In conclusion, although endangerment of plants and animals species is an important issue, I believe other environmental issues are far more significant and efforts should be made to reduce them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state a clear opinion: the introduction says you will argue that other environmental issues are more important, and the conclusion restates this position. The examples about polar bears, food crops, pollution in Lahore and deforestation are relevant. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the species-loss paragraph gives examples but does not explain in much detail why biodiversity loss might be considered the most serious problem overall. The claim that tomatoes are used “in every dish” is also broad and would be stronger with a more precise example. Your response meets the task requirements, but fuller explanation and more carefully supported comparisons would make the discussion more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear four-paragraph structure, with an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Its progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help readers recognise the shifts in argument. The central position is also consistent from the introduction to the ending. Some links between ideas are less smooth: the move from polluted air and water to deforestation is abrupt, and “Therefore” introduces a conclusion without fully showing how the preceding examples establish that these issues are the greatest threat. Use clearer links to explain relationships between examples and claims, and develop transitions within paragraphs rather than relying mainly on standard signposting phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “endangerment,” “contaminated water,” “deforestation,” and “global warming,” which helps communicate the environmental discussion. There is some range, but inaccurate spelling and word choice are noticeable and occasionally make the writing less precise: “enviromental,” “probelm,” “distruction,” and “thread” appear where “threat” is intended. Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “on risk,” “species of plants and animals,” and “disturb its supply system.” Aim to check spelling carefully and learn common collocations as complete phrases. More precise wording would also help avoid broad expressions such as “very important” and make your examples sound more academic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “which is another major environmental issues” and a conditional-style explanation of consequences. Meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “other environmental issues who needs” has incorrect relative-pronoun and subject–verb agreement; “cause many health complications” should agree with the compound subject “breathing … and drinking”; and “the reduction in the particular plants and animals species” has problems with articles and plural forms. The sentence beginning “In this essay” also has an awkward clause structure. Review agreement, articles, and plural forms, and check each sentence’s subject and verb. Greater accuracy in these patterns would strengthen your otherwise clear argument.
