IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
There is no doubt that enviroment issues are becoming serious and we need to adress them. Some people believe that the loss of particular specie of plant and animal is the most important environmental problems of our time.
To start with, enviroment problem of our time is becoming dangerous. Due to this we loss many extint species of plant and animals. Every species has its important role in food chain either it was plant or animal. With the passege of time if species are decreasing it directly effect on humans because humanity relies directly on biodiversity for food, medicines and clean water. If some of species are becoming extint there genetic information are lost forever and it become dificult for humans to find the information about genetics and medicines. Scientist do experiment on animals because somewhere human and animal have resemblance gene. For example: the loss of pollinators like bees damage agriculture
On other hand, rising temperature, global warming, melting ice caps and extreme wheather conditions threatens ecosystems and humans . Due to this this water is melting from the glaceries and excess amount of water is waste. Plastic, air and water pollution directly effect marine life, human health and many other living species. Rapidly clearning forests destroy homes of many wildlife. Deforestation is most important element in enviromental changes because plants absorb carbon dioxide which human release and give oxygen to human.
To conclude, habitat destruction, deforestation and climate change are leading loss of species. Govermnent should take strict action againt this and prevent the nature. They should also control poolution which is either air or plastic pollution it also directly effectmany species.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views: the first body paragraph explains why species loss matters, while the next discusses climate change, pollution and deforestation. Your examples of biodiversity supporting food, medicines and clean water are relevant. However, the discussion is uneven and your own position is not clearly stated. The conclusion lists environmental threats and calls for government action, but does not directly say which view you consider more important. Some points also need fuller explanation: for instance, the claim that genetic information becomes difficult to find is unclear, and the bee example is introduced without explaining its effect on agriculture. State your opinion explicitly and develop each main reason with a clear cause-and-effect explanation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the paragraphs broadly group related ideas. Basic signposting such as “To start with” and “On other hand” helps show the intended contrast. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow: the first body paragraph moves from extinction to food chains, human needs, genetics and animal experiments without clearly connecting each point. Linking is also repetitive or inaccurate, as in “Due to this” and “because” used to introduce several claims. Some references are unclear, including “this water” and “this.” Organise each paragraph around one central claim, then use precise references and linking phrases to show how each example supports it.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant environmental vocabulary, including “biodiversity,” “pollinators,” “ecosystems,” “deforestation” and “marine life,” which gives the response a suitable topic focus. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “genetic information” and “extreme weather conditions.” However, spelling errors are frequent, including “enviroment,” “extint,” “wheather” and “Govermnent,” and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate: “species are decreasing,” “water is melting from the glaceries,” and “excess amount of water is waste.” These errors sometimes make the intended meaning harder to understand. Check spelling carefully and choose natural collocations, such as “species are declining” and “glaciers are melting.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some complex sentences, including the conditional structure “if species are decreasing it directly effect on humans,” and you use clauses to explain causes and consequences. However, control is inconsistent, and many sentences contain errors in agreement, verb forms, articles or sentence construction. For example, “rising temperature … threatens” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “it directly effect on humans” does not form a correct verb pattern. “Every species has its important role” also needs a more accurate article and possessive construction. Punctuation and spacing are uneven, and some sentences run together. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then add subordinate clauses; check subject–verb agreement and verb patterns during revision.
