IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that the extinction of different plants and animals are the primary environmental problem we are facing today. However, other's believe that there are bigger environmental problems that we also face. This essay will discuss both viewpoints, however I believe that although animal and plants extincition is a major issue, however there are bigger problems in the environment such as global warming and pollution, that are more pression and part of the bigger problem.

Admittedly, the biodiversity loss can affect the entire ecosystem if any specific animal or plants become extinct and this can cause a chain reaction. For e.g if there are not enough bees to pollinate flowers, then the production of crops would be affected. Moreover, extinction of species is irreversible unline pollution which can be overcome with neccessary actions.

While biodiversity loss is a major environmental problem, there are other important issues that needs to be addressed. One of the reason is climate change, which affects all species including human beings. For example, it is estimated that sea-levels will rise in bangladesh by 2050, threatening livelihood of plants and all species. This can be linked to a major factor for loss of species.

Additionally, air pollution is another major environmental problems that needs to be addressed. The rise of pollutants in the air can cause major health related issues to humans and animals.

To conclude, while loss of species is a major problem, there are other major environmental problems such as climate change and air pollution that can cause bigger adverse effects.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear position: species loss is serious, but climate change and pollution are broader concerns. The discussion of biodiversity is relevant and the bee-pollination example shows how extinction can affect food production. You also explain that climate change affects many species and mention rising sea levels in Bangladesh. However, the second view is developed more fully than the first, and the pollution point is brief: health effects are asserted but not illustrated or explained in detail. The claim that extinction is irreversible “unlike pollution” also needs qualification, since pollution can have lasting effects. Develop each view with a more precise explanation or example to make the response more balanced and convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for biodiversity loss, climate change and pollution, and a conclusion that restates your position. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Additionally” and “To conclude” help signal the stages of the argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. In the introduction, “however” is repeated, and the relationship between the two environmental views could be expressed more smoothly. The climate-change paragraph says this issue “can be linked to a major factor for loss of species,” but the reference and causal link are not fully clear. Use fewer repeated transition words and make the links between examples and claims explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “biodiversity loss,” “ecosystem,” “pollinate,” “climate change” and “air pollution.” These terms help communicate the main ideas, and some choices show an attempt to be precise. There are, however, several spelling and word-choice problems, such as “extincition,” “unline,” “neccessary” and “pression.” Some collocations are also awkward: “bigger adverse effects” and “rise of pollutants” could be expressed more naturally. The repeated use of “major environmental problem” limits variety. Check spelling carefully and build a wider set of accurate phrases for describing environmental impacts, causes and consequences.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “although,” “if” and “which.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “the extinction … are” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “other’s believe” uses an incorrect apostrophe and form. In “there are other important issues that needs to be addressed,” the verb should agree with the plural noun. The opening sentence also combines “although” and “however” in a way that makes the structure faulty. Review agreement, plural forms and sentence construction, and punctuate examples and introductory clauses more carefully.
