IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
While the loss of species of certain plants and animals remains a environmental disaster. other individuals believe other problems like pollution and global warming remains the major preprators of enivronmental mess. in my opinion global warning and pollution pose a major threat to the environment.
Firstly, it is often believed that the loss of animal and plant species is the main problem and should be the focus area currently. Because plenty of species are going extinct and it has resulted distruption of eco-system, every species plays a vital role in maintaining the ecological stability, the disapperance of one specie can distrup many, For instance, the extinction of mammals that hunt other animals could result in unchecked population growth. Moreover, this will trigger the predictable destructive method known as boom and bust cycle.
On the other hand, i believe that other environmental problems such as air pollution and global warming is more threat for both humans and animals, because these problems are uncontrolled at the moment the average temperature is increasing day by day and it is directly facilitating the extinction of certain animals. As for air pollution the quality of air is also becoming severe, serious health conditions related to air quality is starting to appear in masses. the increase in temperature and air pollution might result in more severe problems in future. For example, people are facing more lung conditions and there are plenty of cases around heart strokes in animals due to the increase in global temperatures. As a result these problems are directly challenging the survival of humans and animals.
In conculsion, the loss of plants and animals is a serious issue as they play a major role in ecolofical balance. But the current focus should on air pollution and global warming as these problems are directly causing major issues in humans and animals and possess a problem for future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state a clear opinion: species loss is serious, but pollution and global warming are the greater current threats. The first body paragraph explains how extinction can disrupt ecosystems, and the second links pollution and rising temperatures to harm to people and animals. These relevant explanations show good coverage of the task. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the case for species loss relies mainly on one predator example, while the discussion of broader environmental problems makes several claims without much specific support. The examples about lung conditions and animal heart problems would be more convincing if explained or supported with a concrete case. More balanced development and precise evidence would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that restates your position. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. The progression within paragraphs is generally understandable, particularly where you connect species loss to ecosystem disruption and then give an example. Some links are less smooth or clear, however. The opening sentence fragment beginning “While the loss…” is followed by a lower-case “other,” and the long sentence about species extinction joins several ideas without clear boundaries. In the second body paragraph, “these problems” can refer to more than one issue. Use clearer sentence boundaries and more precise referencing to make cohesion less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant environmental vocabulary, including “extinction,” “ecological stability,” “air pollution,” and “global temperatures,” which helps communicate the topic. There are also attempts at more specific expressions such as “boom and bust cycle.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause: “preprators,” “enivronmental,” “disapperance,” and “ecolofical” are examples. Some combinations are also unnatural, including “the quality of air is becoming severe” and “a problem for future.” Repeated use of “problems” and “major” limits variety. Build accuracy with topic-specific collocations and check spelling carefully; this would make your vocabulary more precise and natural while preserving your relevant range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a cause-and-effect explanation with “Because plenty of species are going extinct…” and a conditional example about the extinction of predators. The main argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “a environmental disaster” needs the correct article, and “global warming and pollution pose” requires consistent agreement in the later phrase “is more threat.” Several sentences are joined with commas where a full stop or conjunction is needed, and the opening “While…” clause is left as a fragment. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, as in “i” and the lower-case start after the first full stop. Improve clause boundaries, agreement, and sentence-level punctuation while continuing to practise complex structures.
