IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

There is no doubt that environmental issues are the most debatable topic in modern world. Some school of thought give arguments that loss of species of plants and animals is the major cause of environmental pollution in our time, while other majority of researchers believe that some other reasons are behind in environmental problems. In my views other loss of particular species is the main reason of change in environmental pattern due to unblance ecosystem and biodeversity.

On the one hand of thought that pollution and other environmental factors such as climate change is the most common reason. Global warming along with green house effect changes the weather pattern and increase the temperature of earth as a result of which melting of ice glaceirs and sea level rises. Increase transport on roads and carbon emission from industries are main factors the pollute the environment causes reduce air quality and become more adverse for human heath concern. Furthermore plastic contamination and its debris in sea offshore is the other reason that disturb living standard of humans.

On the other hand some species of plants and animals plays a crucial role to balance the ecology of the environment. The disappearance of single specie change the food chain and natural habitate. For example loss of bees and use of pesticides threaten the globe and disturbance in environment has been seen. Bees are the vital pollinator for the crops.

In conclusion that both school of thought plays crucial role for the destroying the environment through the imbalance activities. These problems need to be eradicated by changing pattern with the help of less carbon emission fuels and decrease the number of hebicides usage in agriculture.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views: the paragraph beginning “On the one hand” discusses pollution and climate-related problems, while the next explains how species loss can disrupt ecosystems. Your example of bees as pollinators is relevant, and you do state a preference for species loss in the introduction. However, the position is difficult to follow because “other loss of particular species” is unclear, and the conclusion says both views are important without reaffirming which is the main problem. Several points, such as plastic pollution and transport emissions, are listed rather than explained in relation to their environmental impact. Develop each side with clearer reasoning and make your own judgement consistent from introduction to conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help readers identify the contrast, and examples generally follow the claims they support. However, some links are mechanical or unclear: “On the one hand of thought” does not form a clear transition, and “In conclusion that” is awkward. The progression within paragraphs also relies on adding points with “Furthermore” rather than showing how they connect. Use more precise topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to the paragraph’s main claim; ensure the conclusion follows the position established in the introduction.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt relevant environmental vocabulary, including “green house effect,” “carbon emission,” “food chain,” “biodiversity,” and “pollinator.” This gives the response a suitable topic focus, but control is uneven: several spellings are inaccurate (“unblance,” “biodeversity,” “glaceirs”), and some combinations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “loss of species … is the major cause of environmental pollution” and “sea offshore.” These choices sometimes make the intended meaning harder to understand. Aim for accurate collocations and forms, for example, “species loss disrupts ecosystems” and “plastic debris in the ocean.” Proofreading spelling and choosing precise environmental terms would make your vocabulary more effective.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer sentences using cause-and-effect links, such as “Global warming along with green house effect changes the weather pattern … as a result of which…”. However, complex constructions are often faulty, and errors in agreement, articles, and sentence formation occur throughout. For example, “some school of thought give arguments” has agreement problems, while “some species … plays” and “the factors the pollute” also contain incorrect verb forms. The opening sentence of the second body paragraph, “On the one hand of thought that pollution…,” is not a complete, well-formed clause. Use simpler sentence patterns accurately first, then build complexity; check subject–verb agreement, articles, and clause boundaries.
