IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There are two views regarding the main environmental problem of our time. On one hand some people consider the loss of a certain species of plants and animals is problematic, whereas, on the other hand people assume climate change and natural disaster to be problem. Although, i strongly believe second view because it could result in demise of all living beings.
Some people say loss of particular species is the main environmental problem of current time. To some extent this is true, because extenction of a certain creature or plant creates chain problem for other animals. For instance: if frog becomes extinct snakes also face decrease in number along with rise in grasshopper number which will again cause further problem. This cycle keeps roatating creating bigger problems through a small one.
However, i believe this problem is far more smaller than the second view which is climate change or natural disasters occured by environmental problems is the main problem. These problems are far greater than the first one due to the reason that it could affect all living organism along with earth. Loss of species only affect certain life cycle however, natural disaster holds capacity to destroy the whole life cycle along with the place. In our modern time, loss of species can be revived through different process but, loss of human life and alteration of landscape is not possible through any method.
In conclusion, although loss of certain species may create a problametic condition but it could be neglected. Meanwhile, loss of human life and destruction of earth by climate and natural disaster is the main environmental problem of our time. Many countries all around the world are also considering this the main current hurdle of human race.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state a clear preference for the view that climate change and natural disasters are more serious, especially in the opening and conclusion. The example of frogs, snakes, and grasshoppers is relevant and helps explain how species loss can affect an ecosystem. Your comparison that disasters can destroy habitats and threaten human life also supports your position. However, the second view is treated mainly as climate change and natural disasters, without explaining other environmental problems or showing how climate change contributes to them. The claim that species loss “could be neglected” is also stronger than your earlier reasoning supports. To develop the response further, explain the causes and wider consequences of the second view and qualify your comparison more carefully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The contrast markers “On one hand,” “However,” and “In conclusion” make the main direction easy to follow, and the food-chain example is placed logically within the discussion of species loss. Some connections are less smooth or precise, though. The opening uses “Although” as a sentence fragment before “i strongly believe,” and “This cycle keeps roatating” does not clearly specify which effects are being linked. The conclusion repeats the position but adds a broad claim about what many countries consider without developing it. Use linking phrases more selectively and make references such as “this problem” and “these problems” point clearly to a specific idea.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “extinction,” “climate change,” “life cycle,” and “alteration of landscape,” and these choices help communicate the environmental focus. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “holds capacity” and “current hurdle.” However, several spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “extenction,” “roatating,” and “problametic.” Some collocations are unnatural or imprecise: “chain problem,” “far more smaller,” and “natural disasters occured by environmental problems” make parts of the argument less clear. Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than more elaborate wording; for example, describe an “ecological chain reaction” and say that disasters “are intensified by climate change.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including contrast clauses and cause-and-effect sentences, as in “Although, i strongly believe second view because it could result…” and “if frog becomes extinct…” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some errors in sentence formation and grammar remain. For example, “Although” is incorrectly separated from the main clause, “i” should be capitalised, and “a certain species … is problematic” does not fit the intended plural subject. Articles and agreement are also inconsistent in “if frog becomes extinct” and “it could affect all living organism.” Review clause punctuation, singular and plural agreement, and article use. More accurate control of these patterns would make your complex sentences clearer and more reliable.
