IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Environment crisis has rapidly increases due to the extinction of the major species like plants as well as animals because they assist to maintain balance in the nature. However, others argued that climate change and pollution both are equally connected for the environmental problems.
Commencing with the most salient reason that due to the rise in populace people are engaged in deforestation and hunting animals for thier future developement which result extinction of huge animals and it may distrub ecosystem. Moreover, plants help to clean the environment like consuming CO2 or other harmful gases which is released by factories. However, animals and plants sustain the equal balance of ecosystem. for example, Tigers are threatened by habitat destruction and illegal hunting.
On the other hand, I believe that climate change and pollution are more pressing evironment concerns because they effect both humans and wildlife. Additionally, air pollution causes respritory illeness and climate change leads to heatwaves, floods and rising sea levels. Water pollution makes cleans drinking water difficult to obtain. For instance, extreme heat and irregular rainfall can damage the crops and reduce food production.
To concude, my opinion is both are connected, but I believe climate change and pollution are more serious because they affect humans, animals and the entire planet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a clear opinion: the first body paragraph explains why species loss matters, while the next argues that climate change and pollution are more pressing. Relevant support includes the role of plants in absorbing gases and the effects of heat and irregular rainfall on crops. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the case for species loss relies mainly on brief claims and the tiger example, while the discussion of wider environmental problems gives several consequences. The relationship between biodiversity loss and these broader problems is mentioned in the conclusion but could be explained more fully. The response is also 41 words below the required minimum, limiting the space available to develop and support the ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding opinion. The contrast signalled by “On the other hand” helps readers follow the shift to your preferred view, and examples generally appear alongside the relevant claims. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes abrupt: the first body paragraph moves from population growth and deforestation to plants absorbing gases, then to tigers, without clearly linking these points. Some transitions, such as “Moreover” and “However,” feel mechanical or do not express the relationship between ideas precisely. Improve cohesion by grouping related causes and effects, using clear references to earlier points, and making the connection between species loss and broader environmental pressures explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “extinction,” “deforestation,” “ecosystem,” “habitat destruction,” “air pollution,” and “rising sea levels.” These choices make the main environmental arguments clear, and you attempt more specific language such as “illegal hunting” and “irregular rainfall.” However, spelling and word-choice errors sometimes reduce precision, for example “populace” where “population” is intended, and “cleans drinking water” instead of “clean drinking water.” Other misspellings include “thier,” “developement,” and “evironment.” Some collocations are also awkward, such as “balance in the nature” and “future development.” Check spelling carefully and learn common environmental collocations to make your vocabulary more natural and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “because they affect both humans and wildlife” and a relative clause in “which is released by factories.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening phrase “Environment crisis has rapidly increases” has problems with the article and verb form; “which result extinction” also needs a correctly formed verb and a grammatical construction for the result. Sentence boundaries and punctuation need attention: “nature. However” lacks a space, and “for example” begins a sentence with a lowercase letter. There is also a fragment-like transition in “However, animals and plants sustain the equal balance of ecosystem.” Review verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries while continuing to practise varied sentence structures.
