IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many people believe that the main problems associated with environment are the extinction of species of plants and animals, while other say that there are too many other problems associated with the envrionment as well, apart from plants and animals. In my opinion there are many problems that are attached with the envrionment, not just loss of biodiversity.
On the one hand, a few people tell that kind of plants and animals are decreasing day by day, as they believe, this is the main problem link with the environment. The reason behind is that plants and animals are very important part of the food chain, even if one of them become extinct, then whole ecosystem would be disturped. As a result, rest of all plants and animals will also not able to survive, and eventually it leads to end of the all the species of plants and animals, including humans. Therefore, many people belives that lossing of plants and animals are big problem. For example, due to the rise in tempreture, plants are not surviving, and it result into animals who dependents on the plants are diying increasingly.
On the other hand, many people believes that many other problems are associated with environment such are, pollution and continuous increasing population. In my opinion, the pollution and population both are connected with each other. As the population is growing, the demand of goods are increasing. For supplying enough goods, businesses started to produce goods in higher quantities, for that they require more land, water, electricity, and machines. These all elements are the part of the environment, by using it more, it leads to degradation of the environment, and its impact directly comes on humans, plants and animals. Therefore many people belive, such issues are more important for environment rather than just focusing on species of plants and animals. For example, Manufacturing businesses damage envrionment more compare to other businesses. So, government should have to put some restiction on them.
In conclution, species of plants and animals are important for the environment, but in my opinion, if we do not look for the other aspects of environment, then its impact will be more on humans, plants and animals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a consistent opinion that environmental problems extend beyond species loss. The first body paragraph explains why biodiversity matters through the food chain and ecosystem, while the second links population growth, production and environmental degradation. These are relevant reasons and the examples help illustrate them. However, some claims are too broad or insufficiently explained: the suggestion that one extinction could lead to the end of all species, including humans, needs qualification, and the manufacturing example is asserted rather than supported with a specific impact. Develop the comparison more fully by explaining how these wider problems may be more urgent or far-reaching than species loss.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that restates your position. Sequencing within the second body paragraph is especially understandable, moving from population growth to demand, production and environmental effects. You also use signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand” and “Therefore.” This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility, but cohesion is not always smooth: repeated “Therefore” links can feel mechanical, and phrases such as “these all elements” make the reference unclear. Use a wider range of linking methods and make pronoun references precise so the progression feels more natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “extinction,” “food chain,” “ecosystem,” “biodiversity,” “pollution” and “degradation,” so the reader can follow the environmental discussion. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “loss of biodiversity.” However, the range is limited by repeated general words such as “problem,” “important” and “environment,” and several inaccurate collocations or word forms reduce precision: “problems attached with,” “lossing of plants and animals” and “manufacturing businesses damage environment more compare to” are examples. Spelling errors such as “envrionment” and “tempreture” are also noticeable. Build a bank of accurate topic collocations and check spelling and word forms during revision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including conditional and cause-and-effect structures: “even if one of them become extinct” and “As the population is growing, the demand of goods are increasing.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main meaning is generally recoverable. However, errors in agreement, articles, verb forms and sentence construction occur across the essay. For example, “other say,” “one of them become,” and “the demand of goods are increasing” show agreement problems; “government should have to put” is an awkward modal construction. Some long sentences also become difficult to control. Practise checking each clause for a clear subject and correctly matched verb, and use complex structures only when you can maintain accurate grammar.
