IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Environmental problems have become a considerable debate. Some individuals believe that the loss of certain species of plants and animals is the major challenge while others argue that there are more important environmental problems. In my opinion, problems can not be looked down upon because they all affect our economy and also our climate. Therefore, all problems need to be addressed equally.

On the one hand, the decline of particular species of plants and animals have led to reduced numbers of foreigners visiting our country. Many tourists are attracted to countries in order to understand more about the origin of certain animals and some indigenous trees. They may want to do more research on the natural connection of these species with the current ones. When they are visiting they boost the country's economic growth because tourists will need accomodation and entertainment for the time they are all-round. As a result, there is money circulation which improves the living starndards of people offering these services. As a result, the government gains because there is money circulation. Therefore, this environmental problem has not only affected the country's natural beauty but also affected it's economy.

On the other hand, human activities such as deforestation has affected climate. The cutting down of trees without replacing them may lead to low amount of rainfall in a country. Large forests release considerable amounts of water vapour. This increases atmospheric moisture and can contribute to cloud formation and rainfall. Therefore, cutting them down may lead to little farm produce. Ultimately leading to food insecurities in a country.

In conclusion, all environmental problems should be addressed wholly because they contribute to the country's challenges and may affect the well being of citizens.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear position: species loss matters, but environmental problems should all be addressed. The discussion of species loss links biodiversity to tourism and the economy, while the second body paragraph explains how deforestation can affect rainfall and food production. These are relevant supporting points. However, the first view is developed mainly through its economic effects rather than explaining why species loss is environmentally serious in its own right. The alternative view is also represented by just one example, and the conclusion repeats your position without weighing the relative importance of the problems. Develop the environmental consequences of biodiversity loss and make the comparison behind your opinion more explicit to address all parts more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the discussion. Within paragraphs, ideas generally progress from a claim to supporting consequences. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or repetitive: “As a result” appears twice in close succession, and the repeated reference to money circulation makes the first paragraph feel circular. The link between species loss and tourists’ research interests is not fully clear, and “Ultimately leading to food insecurities” is a fragment that interrupts the flow. Use more varied, precise links and ensure each sentence connects clearly to the paragraph’s main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range for the topic, including “decline of particular species,” “deforestation,” “atmospheric moisture,” and “cloud formation.” These terms help communicate relevant environmental ideas. There are also several inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision, such as “a considerable debate,” “looked down upon,” and “money circulation.” Spelling errors in “accomodation” and “starndards,” along with the incorrect form “food insecurities,” are noticeable, although the overall meaning remains understandable. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise vocabulary for biodiversity and its ecological effects would also help you explain the first viewpoint beyond its impact on tourism.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including the conditional “The cutting down of trees… may lead to low amount of rainfall” and the explanation of how forests contribute to cloud formation. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the decline… have led” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “human activities such as deforestation has affected climate” also needs agreement. “The time they are all-round” is an unclear clause, while “Ultimately leading to food insecurities in a country” is a sentence fragment. There are also article and possessive errors in “low amount” and “it's economy.” Review agreement, articles, possessives, and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use complex structures.
