IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Some people argue that disappearing of particular creatures and trees is the principal echological challenge in this period because of increasing number of some specific wildlife and extinction of some plants. Other people believe that there are more crucial problems such as greenhouse effect and run out of non renewable energy.
On the one hand several individuals consider losing of particular organism and plants is the biggest concern related to environment. Because they are observing that the quantity of some animals rising rapidly which is hampering the echological balance in forests. If the count of predator increases, the number of prey decreases. Eventually, forests become packed with some distint species. Additionally, the ratio of the trees used by those animals for different purpose including making habitats starts to decrease. For example, the biggest mangrove forest in Bangladesh is now filled with a specific type of deer which is being considered as the prime challenge for the environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response begins to address both views: it introduces species loss and mentions greenhouse effects and non-renewable energy, then develops one argument about changes in animal populations and forest balance. However, the second view is not discussed: the essay stops immediately after “On the other hand,” and there is no personal opinion or conclusion. The example about Bangladesh’s mangrove forest is relevant in intention, but its connection to species loss as the main environmental problem is not clearly explained. The response also falls 89 words short of the required minimum, leaving the task substantially incomplete. To improve, complete both sides, state your position clearly, and support each main point with a developed explanation or example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic organisational plan: the opening introduces contrasting views, and “On the one hand” signals the first body paragraph. Within that paragraph, the ideas move from animal numbers to predator–prey effects and then to trees, with “Additionally” and “For example” helping to show the intended links. However, the essay has no completed second body paragraph or conclusion, so progression across the response is incomplete; the final “On the other hand,” is only a fragment of a transition. Some links between claims are also unclear, particularly how an increase in predators leads to forests being “packed” with a species. Develop a complete paragraph for the opposing view and finish with a conclusion that brings the discussion together.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response attempts a reasonably varied range of topic vocabulary, including “ecological balance,” “predator,” “prey,” “extinction,” and “non-renewable energy.” These choices show awareness of environmental terminology, and the main meaning is generally recoverable. However, several inaccurate forms or collocations reduce precision: “disappearing of particular creatures,” “run out of non renewable energy,” and “the ratio of the trees” do not express the intended ideas naturally. There are also spelling errors, including “echological” and “distint.” Aim to learn environmental collocations as complete phrases and check spelling carefully. More precise wording would help distinguish species decline, population growth, habitat loss, and resource depletion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple statements and some longer structures, including a conditional sentence: “If the count of predator increases, the number of prey decreases.” This shows an attempt to express cause and effect, and the central ideas can usually be understood. However, control is uneven in longer sentences, and some grammatical patterns are incomplete or awkward. For example, “Because they are observing that…” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence, while “consider losing of particular organism and plants is…” lacks a clear grammatical structure. There are also issues with articles and number, such as “the count of predator.” Practise building complete sentences around a clear subject and verb, and check singular/plural forms and clause boundaries.
