IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Trees and other creatures collectively build our ecosystem and loss of any species may casue adverse affect on the environment. There are two distinct ideas regarding the extinction of a specific type of plants and animals, one suggests that it is the major problem while others believe that there are more crucial aspects that needs to be considered. In this essay, I will describe the both perspectives and reflect my own opinions according to my knowledge.

The argument in favour of the first idea mostly tend towards to the equilibrium of ecosystem. For instance, the extinction of crows might lead to more wastages as they eat wastages and keep the environment clean. Extinction of a single kind of plant or animal might create a huge difference in overall food cycle. Also, collectively both the trees and animal kingdom forms the beauty of the nature, and there is no hierarchy.

Many individuals also argue that environmental challenges is multidimensional and it does not really dependent on a single species. Environmental problems are directly linked with more vast areas such as climate change, global warming, and deforestation. These made the situation worsen for not only the humans but also all living organisms. Although the environmental degradation is caused by some greedy human, it affects the whole mankind. For example, capitalism is directly associate with the environmental degradation as people wanted to maximize their profit than conserving. the nature.

In think I would vouch for the second opinion as I believe that the extinction of a species is mostly the outcome of several other problems. Individuals do not care about the ecosystem and thus, I think people's behaviour towards the nature is the core problem and it is high time people should worry about. the environment for their own benefit too.

In conclusion, both are arguments are right depending on people's thougths and beilefs. But it important to dive deep to the root of the causes which is often overshadowed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both views and state a clear preference for the second, explaining that species loss is often the result of wider environmental problems. The crow example and the link between profit-seeking and environmental damage are relevant attempts to support your points. However, the two perspectives are not developed equally: the first is illustrated briefly, while the discussion of broader problems lists climate change, global warming and deforestation without explaining their effects in detail. Your own position also needs fuller reasoning; explain how human behaviour drives these problems and why addressing their causes should take priority over protecting individual species. This would make the response more fully developed and directly persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “For instance,” “Although,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the discussion. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The opening paragraph promises to “describe the both perspectives,” and the final paragraph says both arguments are right without clearly reconciling that claim with your preference for the second view. The sentence beginning “These made the situation worsen” also has an unclear reference. Strengthen progression by making each paragraph’s main point explicit and using clearer links between causes, examples and your conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “extinction,” “ecosystem,” “environmental degradation,” and “multidimensional,” which helps convey the subject. Some less common expressions are used inaccurately or unnaturally, however, and this limits precision: “more vast areas,” “wastages,” and “capitalism is directly associate with” do not express the intended ideas naturally. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “casue,” “thougths,” and “beilefs.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the main argument, but they reduce clarity and polish. Focus on accurate collocations and check spelling; choose precise terms rather than adding complex-sounding wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while,” “as,” and “although,” and the main ideas are generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction. For example, “aspects that needs” should have a plural verb, while “the trees and animal kingdom forms” has a subject–verb agreement problem. “It does not really dependent” needs a finite verb, and “In think” appears to be an incorrect sentence opening. Punctuation also needs attention, as in the lower-case “the nature” after a full stop. Review agreement and verb patterns, then proofread sentence boundaries and punctuation.
