IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate about whether the extinction of rare species of plants and animals are the main environmental problem today, while others argue that their are various other vital environmental problems exists. I believe that the extinction of particular species are problem too, but there are more important environmental problems present today such as pollution, deforestation and global warming.

On the one hand, no doubt that many particular species of animals and plants are becoming extinct and many become endangered from a last few decades. One of the main reasons of their loss are excessive hunting and the introduction of invasive species that cause destruction to our native plants. For instances, Tasmaninan Tiger is completely extinct from the world due to its over hunting and the very rare specie of Pakistan Indus Dolphine exist only there now where else in the world is also criticaly endangered. Moreover, many plants that are useful and used as treatment or biomedicine are also becoming endangered because of their overuse. Ultimately, the species that are dependent on them for food and shleter are also dying.

On the other hand, the major problems are global warming, pollution and deforestion. In all these activities humans are directly involved. Due to burning of fossil fuels, excessive traffic on roads, burning of garbages, usage of pesticides and insecticides, sprays, which release chemicals in the atmosphere that cause pollution. These pollutants lead to global warming and pollution, which significantly effect our species and ultimately lead to their death. Furthermore, deforestion also contribute in global warming and extinction of species. We should raise awareness regarding to this to protect our environment and rare species that are beneficial for us.

In conclusion, loss of species are also the problem but there are other more important environmental problems that cause extinction of rare species. We should try to protect our environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear opinion: species loss is a problem, but pollution, deforestation and global warming are more important. The two body paragraphs also give relevant reasons and examples, including hunting, invasive species and fossil-fuel use. However, the discussion is not equally developed. The species-loss paragraph names examples, but the Tasmanian tiger and Indus dolphin details are not clearly connected to why this issue is less important than the alternatives. The second view lists several causes and effects, yet the comparison between these problems and species loss remains broad. Develop the reasoning by explaining the wider scale or consequences of one major environmental problem, then explicitly show how it outweighs species decline in your view. This would make the position more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow, and the ideas generally move from causes to consequences. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, links can feel mechanical, and some references are unclear: “These pollutants” follows a long list of activities and substances, while “this” in “raise awareness regarding to this” does not identify a precise issue. The second body paragraph also repeats pollution and global warming without clearly distinguishing their relationship. Use more precise referencing and organise the causes and effects into clearer steps.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including terms such as “invasive species,” “fossil fuels,” “pesticides,” and “endangered.” These choices help communicate environmental causes and consequences, and some less common vocabulary is attempted. However, inaccurate word choice, collocation and spelling reduce precision: “over hunting,” “rare specie,” “burning of garbages,” “deforestion,” and “criticaly endangered” are examples. Some expressions are also vague or unnatural, such as “vital environmental problems exists” and “useful and used as treatment or biomedicine.” These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main argument, but they limit the control expected at a stronger level. Check spelling carefully and learn environmental vocabulary in natural combinations, such as “overhunting,” “a rare species,” and “medicinal plants.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect clauses and relative clauses, as in “species that are dependent on them for food and shleter.” The overall meaning is usually clear, but some errors in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction remain. For example, “the extinction … are” should use a singular verb, and “many particular species … are becoming extinct and many become endangered from a last few decades” has problems with tense and time expression. The sentence beginning “Due to burning of fossil fuels” is a fragment because it lacks a main clause, while “deforestation also contribute” has subject–verb disagreement. Aim to make each sentence complete, check singular and plural subjects, and use present perfect with “over the last few decades.”
