IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is widely argued that , the main atmoshphare issue is the loss of spacific speices of plants and animals , while others belive that there are more vital environmental difficulties . Personally however , i , side with the latter view .

One the one hand , our environment contain many kind of gases including nitrogen , carbon-di-oxaide , oxygen . The air pollution happens when any of these gases prohibetively increased . As a result our environment get contaminate . Consequently this contamination effact our health . For instance for pollution of air individuals suffer from lunch issues . Another crucial reason is that , this pollution change our climate intermitently . This happens due to the fact that , deforestation and lack of public awareness about climate . As a result , The heat is increasing day by day . Therefore the season changing lately . For exmple ,The summer season is much extented in bangladesh to past . As well as , the Atlantic ice is melting as a consequence , the ocean water is in riseing .

On the other hand , many trees and speices of animal also plays a significants role for our atmoshphare . One major reason is that , it helps to make balance on biodiversity . This is beacuse , when omnivore spices rise in the nature , cornivore speices reduce them and make a balance . Without the balance our environment will destroy . For exmple lion eat deer or many vegitarian animal . otherwise if vegetarian animal increase they will destroy forest and consume all greenary so that for the balance ,nature need carnivore species . Another reason is that some spacific plant assists us in many ways. This is beacuse , some plants produce more oxygen .as well as they give us medicine and many more . For instance , most of the harbal medicine made of plants bark , leaf, trunk etc .

In conclusion , I firmly hold the view that a balanced approach is most reasonable based on reasons discussed above.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a clear personal preference for the view that other environmental problems are more important, and you include relevant points about air pollution, climate change, and the ecological role of species. However, the discussion is only partly developed: the first body paragraph focuses on pollution and climate change, while the opposing view is mainly explained through predator-prey balance and useful plants. The response does not clearly compare the importance of species loss with the other problems, so the position that these problems are more vital is asserted rather than fully justified. Some explanations, such as how pollution affects health, remain general. Develop each side with a clearer explanation and a specific example, then link these points directly to your final judgement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting contrasting views, and a conclusion. Phrases such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help signal the broad organisation. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow, and linking expressions are repetitive or used awkwardly: “As a result,” “Consequently,” and “This happens due to the fact that” appear without always making the relationship between ideas clear. The conclusion introduces a “balanced approach,” which does not fully match the earlier preference for the latter view. Use clearer topic sentences, connect each example explicitly to its main point, and make the final position consistent with the introduction.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt vocabulary relevant to environmental issues, including “biodiversity,” “deforestation,” “contamination,” and “carnivore species.” This shows some effort to use topic-specific language. However, the range is limited and many spelling and word-choice errors make parts of the response harder to understand, for example “atmoshphare,” “spacific,” “lunch issues,” and “Atlantic ice.” Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “the ocean water is in riseing” and “make balance on biodiversity.” Choose accurate, familiar terms before attempting less common ones, and check spelling carefully. Learning collocations such as “maintain ecological balance” and “sea levels are rising” would make your ideas clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including cause-and-effect structures such as “This happens due to the fact that…” and conditional reasoning with “if vegetarian animal increase.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction occur frequently. For example, “our environment contain” needs subject–verb agreement, while “many trees and speices of animal also plays” has problems with both number and agreement. Several sentences also lack a complete or clearly connected grammatical structure, which can make the meaning difficult to follow. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them using conjunctions; check singular/plural forms and verb agreement during revision.
