Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In current time, many individuals believe that the extinctive plants and animals are the biggest environmental problem while some people claim other environmental challenges are more vital. I believe environmental problems such as Air pollution and water pollution are more hazardous due to industrialization.

On one hand, it is inevitable that loss of different types of plants and animals is a huge environmental problem as they played important role in the food chain of other organisms. If one specie will be removed from foodchain it disturbed whole cycle, and not just those organisms which are dependent on them. For example, in lahore we used to see alot of sparrows in the past but now there is reduced at the allarming level. Research also suggests that due to this issue, the quantity of different worms is getting higher. Nevertheless, I believe air pollution and water pollution will disturb the life cycle of all living beings.

On the other hand, challenges especially air pollution and water pollution has affected the whole world due to large scale industrialization. This is because uncontrolled industrial sewege, excessive emissions of pollutants and toxic components especially carbon dioxide is causing global warming. I believe in current time this is biggest challange the whole world is facing. Due to this issue, the world is experiencing the rise of extreme temperature all over the world which is causing the rise of sea level every year. Research suggest if human will not encounter this issue on large scale then the world will end in the next a few centuries.

In conclusion, I believe the deprivation of some animals and plants is one of the major environmental issue however, humanity is facing far more crucial environmental challenges especially Air pollution which needs to be tackle as soon as possible in order to survive.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a clear opinion: species loss is serious, but you consider air and water pollution more hazardous. The food-chain explanation and the Lahore sparrow example support the first view, while industrial emissions and rising temperatures develop your argument for the second. This covers the task well, though the two sides are not equally developed: the sparrow example is followed by a claim about worms without explaining the link, and the pollution discussion would benefit from a more specific example or clearer evidence. The prediction that “the world will end” is also too sweeping to be persuasive. To strengthen the response, explain the consequences of each problem more precisely and connect examples directly to your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that restates your position. “On one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow, and the contrast between species loss and pollution is apparent. Some links are less smooth or precise, however. The sentence beginning “Nevertheless” shifts from the food-chain argument to pollution without fully explaining the relationship, while “this issue” in the final body paragraph could refer to industrial pollution, global warming, or both. Improve cohesion by making these references explicit and using transitions to show whether you are adding evidence, explaining a consequence, or contrasting ideas. This would make the progression more consistently clear and less dependent on formulaic signposting.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “food chain,” “industrialization,” “emissions,” “toxic components,” and “global warming.” These choices help communicate the main environmental issues, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “extinctive plants,” “the deprivation of some animals,” and “industrial sewege.” Spelling errors such as “allarming” and “challange” also reduce accuracy. In places, broad wording such as “the world will end” weakens the precision of your argument. Aim to use established environmental terms and check spelling; choosing precise phrases such as “species extinction” and “industrial wastewater” would make the discussion clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and causal structures, and the main meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “challenges … has affected” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “If one specie will be removed … it disturbed” combines an incorrect conditional form with an inconsistent verb tense. “They played important role” also needs an article and a more suitable tense. These errors do not usually prevent the reader from following your argument, but they limit control. Practise accurate present-tense generalisations and conditional patterns, and proofread each sentence for subject–verb agreement and articles while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
