IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, some individuals believe that the most critical environmental issue of our time is the disappearance of some animals and plants. While others say that there are more significant environmental problems. For my perspective, i totally agree with the second view. In this essay I will discuss the both views in detail and I will give reasons for my opinion.
One major reason why some people have a concern about the loss of particular species is that they believe that if we loss some animals and plants, the eco-system balance will be affected and the consequences of this will directly harm the environment. For example, if the cats disappeared suddenly, it would be more rats in our homes and the number of rat will be uncontrolable.
On the other side, a lot of individuals find the air pollution is more dangerous than the loss of some species. Since it can harm our respiratory system. Furthermore, many children may get sick by breath of this polluted air. For instance, the dust came from car's engine and from the industerial factories such as CO,CO2,SOx and NOx, these gases could mix with water from rains to form acid rains which will harm us and even plants or animals. Therfore, I agree with that air pollution considered more dangerous than any thing else.
In conclusion, while some People find the eco-system balance in very important to the environment, Others argue that we must take into consideration that our health and our children's health beside the environment are more significant and air pollution can harm both.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state a clear position: you agree that other environmental problems, particularly air pollution, are more serious. The examples about ecological balance and polluted air are relevant, and the explanation of how emissions can contribute to acid rain supports your argument. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the species-loss paragraph relies mainly on a brief hypothetical about cats and rats, while the air-pollution argument receives more explanation. The claim that air pollution is more dangerous than “anything else” is also broader than the evidence provided. To strengthen the response, explain more fully why species loss matters and compare its consequences directly with those of pollution before reaching your conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The progression from the ecological argument to air pollution is easy to follow, and signposts such as “For example,” “Furthermore,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and also shows some effective paragraphing. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical, with repeated framing such as “some individuals believe” and “a lot of individuals find.” The opening sentence of the pollution paragraph, followed by the fragment “Since it can harm our respiratory system,” also interrupts the flow. Use fewer formulaic transitions and connect each example explicitly to the point it supports.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of environmental vocabulary, including “disappearance,” “eco-system balance,” “respiratory system,” and “acid rains,” so the topic is generally clear. There are also attempts to use more specific terms, such as “industrial factories” and the names of gases. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “uncontrolable,” “industerial,” and “Therfore” are misspelled, while “the loss of particular species” and “more dangerous than anything else” could be expressed more precisely in context. Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “find the air pollution is more dangerous.” Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common collocations, for example “consider air pollution more dangerous” and “species extinction.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including a conditional sentence about cats and rats and a clause explaining that gases can mix with rainwater. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “if we loss” should use the past participle “lose,” and “it would be more rats” needs a construction such as “there would be more rats.” The sentence “Since it can harm our respiratory system” is a fragment, and “the number of rat will be” has a plural and agreement problem. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, as in “i” and “CO,CO2.” Practise complete sentences, conditional forms, and subject–verb agreement while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
