IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Some people believes that fundamental environment issue of our time is the reduction of particular species of plants and animals. While other consider that there are more important environmental problems exist. I do agree with the statement that the loss of particular species such as plants and animals are the main problem that causes environmental issues.
Currently, the reduction of plants and animals are one of the issues that are causing issues in the environment. For instance, the reduction of trees in big cities are causing pollution in the air. However, this is one of the main cause of increasing of breathing problems in humans. The air quality becomes low so that humans feel difficulty to inhale air and breathe properly. People feel suffocation and they do not breathe properly because of low quality of air. If the plantation of trees will increase over the time, it will decrease the pollution from air and the respiratory problems will also start decreasing over the time.
There is also one of the main reason of environmental problem is the noise pollution. The increase of loud music and other informal activities also plays a part in environmental problems. For example, the diseases such as hypertension, high blood pressure, migraine and headache is mainly caused by the noise pollution. Traffic is also one of the reason of environmental problem. For example, the horn and smoke of different transportations have different impacts on the environment. The smoke pollutes the air and causes air pollution. Meanwhile, the horns creates noise pollution.
In a nutshell, Currently reduction of plants and animals is the fundamental cause of environmental problem. However, the other aspects plays the part in addition to the envrionmental problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You state a position in the introduction and conclusion, arguing that species loss is the fundamental environmental problem, and you include relevant examples involving trees, air pollution, and respiratory health. However, the task asks you to discuss both views, and the second view is represented mainly by noise and traffic pollution without explaining why these problems might be considered more important than species loss. The discussion of species decline also shifts to tree loss in cities, so the link to the loss of particular species is not fully established. Your ideas are relevant, but several are asserted rather than developed or compared. To strengthen the response, explain the consequences of biodiversity loss and weigh them against broader problems such as pollution or climate change before reaching your conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a concluding statement. Examples generally follow the points they are intended to support, and phrases such as “For instance” and “However” help signal relationships. However, progression between ideas is limited: the first body paragraph repeats the effects of poor air quality, while the second lists noise and traffic pollution without clearly connecting them to the opposing view in the question. Some linking is awkward or repetitive, particularly “over the time” and the repeated use of “For example.” The conclusion also introduces no clear synthesis of the two positions. Organise each body paragraph around one view, use references that make the relationships between claims clear, and make the comparison explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “species,” “pollution,” “respiratory problems,” and “environment,” so the reader can follow the general subject. There are also attempts at more specific terms, such as “hypertension” and “suffocation.” However, the range is limited by repeated words and phrases, especially “environmental problem,” “causing,” and “pollution.” Several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “informal activities,” “the quality becomes low,” and “the smoke of different transportations.” The misspelling “envrionmental” also affects accuracy. These issues sometimes make the intended meaning less precise. Build a wider set of accurate collocations for biodiversity and environmental impacts, and check word forms and spelling when editing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including conditional forms such as “If the plantation of trees will increase…” and cause-and-effect clauses. However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently in subject–verb agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence construction. For example, “Some people believes” should use a plural verb, while “the reduction of trees… are causing” has a singular subject with a plural verb. In “there are more important environmental problems exist,” the two structures are incorrectly combined. The conditional sentence also needs a suitable verb form after “if.” These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, but they reduce clarity and control. Practise checking the subject and verb in each clause and build complex sentences from accurate patterns.
