IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It has been in debate since so long that environmental factors of our time are contributing to the loss of habitat of animals and plants resulting in the loss of enormous species which results in major environmental problems due to disturbance in biodiversity whereas, it is believed that there are more important and adverse environmental problems than just lossing particular species.
Firstly, the main environmental problem since past decades about which all zoologist and botanist are much anxious about is the environmental hazards created by man to environment which result in the loss of soo many species of aniamls and plants such as dinosours are now just in books and there are alot of other species too such as Indian ocean big whale, black dear, white panther and so on. Same is in the case of plants alot of flowers and forest are lost for the cause of human development. This imbalance in the nature disturb the natural food chains and cycle resulting in the disturbance at much greater level than is being understood.
Secondly there are many more enivronmental problems which are disturbing the natural habitat on Earth such as the air pollution which is caused by many sources such as industries, motor vehicles, commercial jets, burning of forests for human land and this not only contribute to air pollution but alos result in global warming which results in melting of glacier and causing huge floods and land sliding. The different kind of mankind activites are also causing damage to the ozone layer which protect the human against Uv radiation but it is already damage over the western coast resulting in skin diseases.
In conclousin my opinion is that enivronmental problems possess much greater risk and adverse effects than we could imagine so it is our responsibility to reduce these deterimental effect and save our beloved planet earth for the good.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You discuss both views: the first body paragraph explains how species loss can disrupt food chains, while the second identifies pollution, global warming and ozone damage as wider environmental concerns. Your conclusion also gives a position, favouring the view that broader environmental problems pose greater risks. However, the position is not clearly established until the conclusion, and the discussion is only partly developed. For example, the species examples are listed rather than explained, and the claim about ozone damage on the western coast is not clarified or supported. To strengthen the response, state your view in the introduction and explain how each example demonstrates the relative importance of the problems.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an opening, two body paragraphs presenting the contrasting views, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the broad organisation. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to track because several ideas are joined into long sentences, and links between causes and consequences are not always clear. The opening sentence, for instance, combines habitat loss, species extinction and biodiversity in a way that obscures the main point. Some transitions also feel mechanical. Use shorter, more focused sentences, and make each paragraph develop one central claim with clear links between its supporting explanation and example.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt topic-specific vocabulary, including “biodiversity,” “food chains,” “air pollution,” “global warming” and “ozone layer,” which helps convey the subject. There is also some effort to use less common terms such as “detrimental.” However, the range is limited by repeated general words such as “environmental problems,” “loss” and “result,” while inaccurate word choices and spelling errors sometimes distract or make meaning less precise. Examples include “lossing,” “so many,” “big whale” and “black dear.” Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling carefully; for instance, use “species extinction,” “large whale species” and “black deer.” More precise vocabulary would make your comparisons and explanations clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt complex sentences and use clauses to connect causes and effects, as in the discussion of pollution leading to global warming and melting glaciers. However, these structures are often faulty, and sentence boundaries are not controlled consistently. The opening is a long sentence with several ideas joined together, while “This imbalance in the nature disturb the natural food chains” shows problems with agreement and article use. In “the ozone layer which protect the human,” the verb does not agree with its subject, and the clause is not punctuated clearly. Build accuracy by separating long sentences, checking subject–verb agreement and articles, and practising complex clauses before combining several causes and effects.
