IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued that depletion of plants and animals has major consequences on enviroment.while, the rest of the people belive that there are far more enviromental challenges. In this essay the major reasons of both perspective will be given

Commencing with the first view, decline the number of plants and animals create an enviromental issues, to illustrate: by reduction in the number of vegetation there would be a lack of oxygen because plants are a source of oxygen by absorbing carbondioxide and providing oxygen. Moreover, defficiency of plants would induce a shortage of medicines since most of the floras offer a unique cellulose which is further used to make medicines. whereas, loss of animals means collapse of whole ecosystem by scarcity in the amount of food, destroying the entire food chain.

Turning to another point, pollution is the main cause of ecological issues due to incresing number of private vehicles and rise in the amount of carbondioxide CO2. Secondly, climate change is a huge cause of enviromental crises because of weather transformation more likely in summers in which glaciers melts and cause the flood in rural areas. However, Global warming such as Carbondioxide which trap the heat in to the atmostphere which contributes to rise the intensity of heat in atmostphere.

Overall, both impact the enviroment negatively, vegetation and animals are being reduced which is creating a big challenges. In contrast, enviromentals issues could also be danger. In my opinion loss of vegetations and animals effect enviroment sustainably. I would say both should be consisered equally in order to improve our enviroment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views by discussing the effects of declining plant and animal populations, then presenting pollution and climate change as wider environmental concerns. Your examples about oxygen, medicines, food chains, vehicle emissions and melting glaciers are relevant, and your conclusion gives a position that both issues deserve attention. However, the discussion is only partly developed: the claim that plants provide a “unique cellulose” for medicines is unclear, and the second view is not clearly compared with species loss to show why these problems may be more important. Your opinion also shifts from saying both should be considered equally to saying biodiversity loss affects the environment sustainably. Explain your position more directly and support each main point with accurate, specific reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Phrases such as “Commencing with the first view” and “Turning to another point” signal the change in focus, and the examples generally follow the point they are meant to support. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow. The second-view paragraph moves from pollution to climate change and then repeats global warming without making the relationship between these ideas clear. Some linking words, including “whereas” and “However,” do not express the intended connection. Use clearer topic sentences and organise each paragraph around one main idea, with a logical explanation and example before moving on.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt topic-specific vocabulary, including “ecosystem,” “food chain,” “climate change,” “glaciers” and “atmosphere,” which helps establish the environmental focus. There is also some effort to vary expression through phrases such as “ecological issues” and “environmental crises.” However, the range is limited and several inaccurate or awkward choices make meaning less precise, for example “defficiency of plants,” “unique cellulose,” “weather transformation” and “vegetations.” Spelling errors such as “enviroment,” “belive” and “consisered” are also noticeable. Build a reliable set of collocations for this topic and check spelling and word forms; precise, natural phrasing will make your arguments easier to understand.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because” and “which,” and you use a range of sentence openings. However, control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles and punctuation frequently make the reader work to understand the intended meaning. For example, “decline the number of plants and animals create” has an incorrect subject structure and verb agreement, while “glaciers melts” has a plural subject with a singular verb. The opening also joins sentences incorrectly after “environment,” and several sentences lack clear boundaries. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then add subordinate clauses, checking subject–verb agreement, articles and punctuation in each sentence.
