IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

While some people argue that extinction of few species of plants and animals is the main environmental problem, others believe that there are other more important problems in the environment. In my opinion, the second argument is more reliable because there are bigger problems that harms everyone on the planet, including plants and animals.

On the one hand, people believe that the loss of some species is the main issue because of the frequency and pace with which some animals and plants are becoming extinct. There has been a significant increase in the number of extinctions of various species since the past few decades, which is why it gains the attention of being the main issue. For example, various species of flora and fauna are endangered or on the verge of extinction on this planet. This creates an urge of importance towards people and to make it a bigger environmental issue compared to other prominent ones.

On the other hand, some people argue that there are more important environmental issues because extinction of animals and plants occur due to the larger environmental problems such as deforestation and global warming. The changes in the environment such as increase in the temperature and reduced number of forests are the main problems, and is also the reason why the flora and fauna of the planet are gradually becoming endangered and extinct. For example, animals who are habituated to live in nomal temperatures would not be able to live if they are exposed to the surrounding with higher temperatures. As a result, very few species suvive and adapt to the changing environment.

In conclusion, although the loss of some species of animals and plants is not a smaller problem, it is caused due to the main environmental problems such as global warming and deforestation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and make your own position clear: you consider species loss important, but argue that broader problems such as global warming and deforestation are more fundamental. The second view is developed more convincingly, with a cause-and-effect explanation of how habitat and temperature changes threaten wildlife. The first view is less fully supported: the discussion mainly says extinctions are increasing and attracting attention, rather than explaining why biodiversity loss could itself be the most serious environmental problem. The examples are relevant but general. To strengthen the response, explain the wider consequences of losing species, then support each side with a more specific example. Your conclusion restates your position consistently.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The progression from the claim about species loss to the argument about underlying environmental causes is easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help signal this structure, and the cause-and-effect sequence in the second body paragraph is coherent. Some connections are less precise or repetitive, particularly the repeated references to “main environmental problems” and the transition from the first view’s examples to its claim of importance. Use referencing and linking more flexibly, and make the relationship between each example and the paragraph’s main point explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “extinction,” “endangered,” “deforestation,” “global warming,” and “adapt to the changing environment.” These terms make the subject clear, and some choices, such as “on the verge of extinction,” are appropriate. However, several phrases are awkward or imprecise, including “urge of importance,” “gains the attention of being the main issue,” and “surrounding with higher temperatures.” There are also spelling errors in “nomal” and “suvive,” and “flora and fauna” is repeated. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; more precise wording would make the argument sound more fluent without changing its meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including a relative clause in “the pace with which some animals and plants are becoming extinct” and a conditional sentence beginning “animals … would not be able to live if…”. Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “problems that harms everyone” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “the main problems, and is also the reason” does not maintain agreement with its plural subject. The phrase “extinction of few species” also needs an article or plural form, and “occur due to the larger environmental problems” has an awkward grammatical construction. Review agreement, articles, and sentence structure, then proofread longer sentences to ensure each subject has a matching verb.
