Student answer (Band 7.5)
Some believe that the fictional violence people watch on television is harmless, whereas others think that it may encourage violent behaviour. I would argue that we need some restrictions on the content of movies but it does not indicate that the censorship office needs to eliminate all violent scenes.
Firstly, it is true that fictional violence can barely bring a negative impact on adults as they have already been through many difficulties and formed their own values. On the contrary, watching some exciting scenes can entertain them in a better way because people always need to find an outlet to release pent-up energies. For instance, after working for long hours, employees can relax themselves by watching action movies, enabling them to have better energy for other tasks.
On the other hand, when it comes to children, who are not able to differentiate between positive and negative behaviours, they can be heavily influenced by videos that are rich in violent scenes. For example, if students were allowed to access every website online without restrictions, they would learn what they have just watched and apply it with classmates in schools, affecting the educational environment. Further down the line, this misbehave may even affect their adult life, driving them to have unnecessary conflict with others.
For these reasons, it must be admitted that fictional violence has its advantages and disadvantages. In order to establish a better environment for younger generations, governments ought to censor sensitive information from movies and put a warning on their covers, which enables parents to decide whether or not their children can watch this movie. Meanwhile, it is of importance that adults can still access all the movies online as their mental health can affect the atmosphere within families.
In conclusion, while some believe that fictional violence is harmless because they focus on the benefit for adults, others think that it is harmful because their focus is on children. Thus, governments need to strike a balance, allowing adults to access all the movies and restricting access for children.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between the impact of violence on adults versus children. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more nuanced examples or explore the 'harmless' argument with greater depth, perhaps by discussing the cathartic theory of media violence in more academic terms. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a logical structure.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the relationship between the arguments is clear. The use of referencing is generally accurate, though some transitions could be more varied to improve the flow further.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is adequate and generally appropriate for the task. The student uses terms like 'pent-up energies', 'differentiate', and 'censor', which demonstrate a reasonable range. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'this misbehave' (should be 'this misbehavior') and 'bring a negative impact' (usually 'have a negative impact'). The range is sufficient to convey ideas clearly, but more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions would be needed to reach the 8.0 band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The student demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is generally good control over grammar, although there are occasional errors, such as 'it does not indicate that the censorship office needs to eliminate' (slightly awkward phrasing) and 'it is of importance that adults can still access' (should be 'it is important'). Punctuation is generally accurate. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the errors present do not impede communication or cause confusion for the reader.
