Student answer (Band 7.5)

Television programmes and films often contain scenes of fictional violence, and opinions differ about their influence on society. While some people believe such content is simply a form of entertainment with no real impact on viewers, others argue that it can encourage aggressive behaviour. I believe that although most may negatively affect some individuals, especially children.

On the one hand, supporters of violent entertainment argue that viewers understand the difference between fiction and real life. Many action films, superhero movies and crime dramas are clearly imaginery and are watched purely for enjoyment. Most people do not become violent after watching these prograames becuase they are aware that the events are scripted. For example, millions of people watch Marvel films or action series every year, yet the vast majority never display aggressve behaviour. They simply enjoy the excitement and storytelling.

On the other hand, critics believe repeated exposure to fictional violence can influence attitude and behaviour, particularly among young viewers. Children and teenagers are more likely to imitate they see on screen because they are still developing emotionally. Research by the American Academy of pediatrics has suggested that frequent exposure to media violence may increase aggressive thoughts and reduce sensitivity towards real violence.

In my opinion, fictional violence is not harmful for most responsible adults. However, unrestricted access to violent television programmes can have negative consequences for children and vulnerable individuals.

In coclusion, although fictional violence is harmless entertainment for many viewers, it can influence the behaviour of some people. Appropriate parental supervision and responsible broadcasting are essential to minimise its potential risks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, particularly in the body paragraphs where you contrast the 'entertainment' perspective with the 'influence on behaviour' perspective. However, the thesis statement in the introduction is grammatically incomplete ('I believe that although most may negatively affect some individuals, especially children'), which slightly weakens the clarity of your position. To improve, ensure that your introduction clearly outlines your stance in a complete sentence. Overall, the development of ideas is sufficient to meet the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different viewpoints. The flow between sentences is generally smooth, although some transitions could be more sophisticated. The referencing is clear, and the structure supports the overall argument well. You have successfully managed the logical flow of the essay, which is a key requirement for this band.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'fictional violence', 'aggressive behaviour', and 'unrestricted access'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'imaginery' (imaginary), 'prograames' (programmes), 'becuase' (because), 'aggressve' (aggressive), and 'coclusion' (conclusion). While these do not impede communication, they prevent a higher score. To reach a higher band, focus on proofreading to eliminate these slips and try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to show greater flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'While some people believe... others argue that...'. There is good control over most sentence constructions, but there are some grammatical slips, such as the incomplete sentence in the introduction and the phrase 'imitate they see on screen' (missing 'what'). Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. To improve, focus on ensuring all sentences have a clear subject and verb, and try to vary your sentence length further to enhance the flow of your writing.
