Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, violence is a common feature of television programmes and films. While some people believe that fictional violence is simply a form of harmless entertainment. However, others disagree that it can encourage people to think violently. In this essay I will mention both the views and give my own opinion before the conclusion paragraphs for my inclination are articulated in the following paragraphs.

On the one hand , fictional violence can be considered harmless entertainment because viewers generally understand that the the events shown on television are not real. Many people watch action films and superhero programmes simply because they find them exciting and enjoyable . Such programmes can also help people relax after a busy day. To cite an instance, a person may watch an action movie containing fighting and dangerous situations without having any desire to behave violently in real life.

On the other hand repeated exposure to violent content may influence some viewers, particularly children. Young people may have difficulty distinguishing between fictional behaviour and appropriate behaviour in real life. If violent characters are presented as powerful or successful, children may attempt to copy their actions. For instance, a child may frequently sees characters solving problems through violence might gradually believe that aggression is an acceptable way to deal with disagreements.

In my opinion, fictional violence can be acceptable as entertainment for mature viewers, but excessive exposure can have harmful effects, especially on children. Parents should therefore pay attention to the programmes their children watch and encourage them to consume age-appropriate content.

In conclusion, although fictional violence is not automatically harmful, excessive exposure may contribute to aggressive attitudes and behaviour.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of children struggling to distinguish between fiction and reality. However, the development is somewhat brief. While the position is clear, the essay could benefit from more depth in the analysis of why some people believe violence is harmless beyond just 'relaxation.' The conclusion is also quite abrupt. To reach a higher band, ensure that each body paragraph fully explores the implications of the arguments presented rather than just stating them.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'To cite an instance' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, there is a minor issue with sentence structure in the introduction where a fragment occurs: 'While some people believe that fictional violence is simply a form of harmless entertainment. However, others disagree...' This creates a slight disruption in flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, with terms like 'fictional violence,' 'repeated exposure,' and 'age-appropriate content' used correctly. The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly. There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choice is generally accurate. To improve, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range. For example, instead of 'help people relax,' you could use 'alleviate stress' or 'provide a form of escapism.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are error-free, there are some grammatical slips. For instance, in the introduction, the sentence structure is fragmented. Additionally, in the third paragraph, the phrase 'a child may frequently sees characters' contains a subject-verb agreement error ('sees' should be 'see'). Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the punctuation is generally handled well. To move to a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and avoiding sentence fragments.
