Student answer (Band 5.5)

There are disagreements in the views about fictional violence. While a group of people think fictional violence is harmless, others think it influences humans to be violent. I completely agree that fictional violence can be harmful for people.

There is a group of people, who think that violence depicted in the fictions are harmless. They think of it as an entertainment medium, so they refuge to believe that it can motivate people to be violent. They firmly believe that people watch fictions for fun and nobody takes it seriously. But from my point of view, this group of people doesn't feel that watching violence in movies changes people's perspective towards violence.

Those who believes violence portrayed in films or in fictions encourage people to imitate those in real life, has proposed different reasons behind it. Some studies showed that people like to express the chaos in their mind through violence towards others. Some take motivation from the fictions they have read or watched and plot the scenario to execute. It is also proved through research that watching violence in fictions for a extended period of time changes perception of violence and an individual starts to normalize it eventually. Some gets thrills watching violence in fictions and try to recreate it in real life. I think, there should be proper moderation done prior release of a fiction. It will create a boundary to the widespread of violence portrayed in fictions.

In the end, fictional violence can stimulate a persons brain to be violent, so it is better to limit the level of presentation of violence in the fictions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the normalization of violence and the psychological impact of media. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the mention of 'studies' and 'research' is vague and lacks specific examples or deeper analysis to fully support the points. The conclusion is brief and repeats the main argument without adding further insight. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand on your points with more concrete examples or logical explanations of how and why these effects occur.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a progression of ideas from the opposing view to your own perspective. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'There is a group of people' and 'Some studies showed' are used frequently, which limits the flow. Additionally, some transitions between sentences are abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns and referencing are used more precisely would help the essay flow more naturally and improve the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'fictional violence,' 'entertainment medium,' and 'normalize.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'refuge to believe' (should be 'refuse') and 'prior release of a fiction' (should be 'prior to the release of fictional content'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic structures. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repeating the word 'fictions' as a countable noun, as it is typically uncountable in this context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('Those who believes', 'Some gets'), incorrect article usage, and awkward phrasing ('the widespread of violence'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in sentence construction. The errors do not significantly impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of articles and prepositions will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
