Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often argued that fictional violence shown on television is simply harmless entertainment, while others believe that it can encourage people to behave violently. Although violent programmes can be entertaining and do not necessarily affect everyone, I believe that excessive exposure to such content can have a negative influence on people, particularly young viewers.

On the one hand, some people believe that violence in television programmes is a form of harmless entertainment. They argue that most viewers understand the difference between fiction and reality, so watching violent scenes does not necessarily make them violent. Moreover, action films and television series often use violence to make their stories more exciting and engaging. For example, viewers may enjoy an action series because of its suspense and dramatic storyline without actually wanting to copy the behaviour of the characters. Therefore, fictional violence can simply be considered another form of entertainment.

On the other hand, there is a concern that frequent exposure to violent content can influence people’s behaviour. This is particularly true for children and teenagers, who may be more easily influenced by what they see on television. If violence is repeatedly presented as an acceptable or successful way of solving problems, viewers may gradually become less sensitive to aggressive behaviour. For instance, a young person who regularly watches characters using violence to resolve conflicts may start to believe that aggression is an acceptable response to difficult situations

In conclusion, while fictional violence can be harmless entertainment for many people, I believe that excessive exposure to violent content can negatively influence behaviour. Therefore, television violence should be presented responsibly, especially in programmes that are likely to be watched by younger audiences.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt effectively. You have clearly presented both sides of the argument and maintained a consistent personal position throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between adult viewers and younger audiences, which adds depth to the discussion. The conclusion effectively synthesises the main points and provides a clear final stance. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific real-world examples, such as referencing specific studies or well-known media debates, to further strengthen the support for your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the two opposing views is smooth. You have used a range of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' appropriately. The paragraphing is logical and helps the reader follow your argument easily. The referencing is clear throughout, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words. The structure is very solid and supports the overall flow of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'excessive exposure', 'gradually become less sensitive', and 'presented responsibly' show a good command of language. While the vocabulary is accurate and natural, it is mostly standard. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or less common collocations and idiomatic expressions related to media studies or psychology, such as 'desensitisation', 'societal implications', or 'vicarious experience', to show greater flexibility and control over academic register.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional clauses ('If violence is repeatedly presented...') and concessive clauses ('Although violent programmes can be entertaining...'). The grammar is highly accurate, and there are very few errors. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. The majority of your sentences are error-free, which indicates a high level of control. To reach the highest band, ensure that even the most complex sentences are constructed with absolute precision, though your current performance is already very strong.
