Student answer (Band 6.0)

Working from home has become increasingly common over the past decade due to advances in technology. While some people believe that remote work offers greater flexibility and convenience, others argue that it can negatively affect communication and productivity. In my view, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages if it is managed effectively.

On the one hand, working from home can save employees considerable time and money because they do not have to commute. They can use this extra time to rest, complete household responsibilities or spend more time with their families. Moreover, remote work provides greater flexibility, allowing employees to organise their schedules around their personal needs. For example, parents may be able to spend more time with their children while continuing their careers. This can improve both their well-being and job satisfaction.

On the other hand, remote work can reduce face-to-face communication. Employees may feel isolated when they have limited contact with colleagues, and this can make teamwork and collaboration more difficult. Another drawback is that the boundary between work and personal life can become unclear. Some employees may continue working beyond their normal hours, which can increase stress and lead to burnout.

In my opinion, however, these disadvantages can be reduced through effective management. Companies can organise regular online meetings and occasional face-to-face gatherings, while employees can maintain clear working hours. Therefore, remote work can provide significant benefits without seriously affecting productivity or communication.

In conclusion, although working from home has some drawbacks, I believe its benefits are greater. It saves time and money, provides flexibility and can improve work-life balance when it is properly managed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 1.0

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for a discussion on the impact of fictional violence on television, but the essay discusses the advantages and disadvantages of working from home. Because the response fails to address the task prompt entirely, it cannot be assessed for task achievement regarding the specific topic. In an official IELTS examination, this would result in a score of 1.0 for Task Response as the content is irrelevant to the question provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

Despite being off-topic, the essay itself is well-structured. It uses clear paragraphing, with an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting opposing views, a paragraph for the writer's opinion, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', 'Another drawback', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. The logical progression of ideas is clear, and the referencing is consistent throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for an academic essay. The student uses a good range of topic-specific vocabulary such as 'flexibility', 'productivity', 'collaboration', 'burnout', and 'well-being'. The collocations are natural, and there is no evidence of spelling errors. While the vocabulary is not highly sophisticated or idiomatic, it is precise and sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly and fluently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The essay demonstrates a high level of grammatical control. There is a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'While some people believe that..., others argue that...' and 'If it is managed effectively'. Punctuation is used correctly, and there are virtually no grammatical errors. The sentences are error-free and demonstrate a strong command of English syntax, which would typically be indicative of a high band score in this criterion.
