Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often argued that fictional violence shown on television is harmless entertainment, while others believe that it encourages people to behave violently. Although both views have some valid points, I believe that fictional violence does not usually affect people's behaviour because most viewers understand that these scenes are not real.

On the one hand, many people watch television for entertainment, and fictional violence is a common part of films and television programmes. People usually watch action movies because they enjoy exciting stories and characters, rather than because they want to copy violent actions. For example, children and young adults often watch Marvel movies, which contain many imaginary fights and battles. However, most viewers understand that these scenes are fictional and simply enjoy the characters and stories. Therefore, watching violent scenes does not necessarily mean that people will become violent in real life.

On the other hand, some people believe that television violence can have negative effects, especially on children. Young children may not always understand the difference between fictional scenes and real-life behaviour. As a result, they may try to copy some of the actions they see on television, which could cause dangerous situations. For example, *Crime Patrol* is mainly made to create awareness about crime and its consequences. However, some people may use the information shown in the programme in a negative way and learn how certain crimes are committed. This shows that violent or criminal content can sometimes have harmful effects on a small number of viewers.

In conclusion, although fictional violence may have some negative effects, particularly on children, I believe that it is mainly a form of entertainment. Most people can understand the difference between fiction and reality, so watching violent programmes does not necessarily make them violent.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, such as the distinction between entertainment and potential negative influences on children. However, the development could be further enhanced by providing more specific, nuanced examples or deeper analysis of the 'encourages violent behaviour' argument. While the position is clear, the supporting arguments remain somewhat general. Overall, the response meets the requirements for a Band 7, as it addresses all parts of the task with a clear, consistent position throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the transition between the two opposing views is managed well using cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different viewpoints. While the flow is generally smooth, some of the cohesive links are quite standard. To reach a higher band, the student could use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing is more sophisticated throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate and appropriate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. Phrases such as 'fictional violence', 'create awareness', and 'consequences' are used correctly. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on fairly common vocabulary. To achieve a higher score, the student should aim to incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical items or idiomatic collocations that demonstrate a greater degree of precision and stylistic awareness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is generally accurate, and errors are rare and do not impede communication. For example, the use of conditional structures and complex sentences like 'Although both views have some valid points, I believe that...' shows good control. Punctuation is also handled correctly. To move into the Band 8 range, the student should aim for a wider variety of complex structures and ensure that the majority of sentences are error-free, though the current level of accuracy is already quite strong.
