Student answer (Band 5.5)

### Television Violence

It is often argue that fictional violence shown on television is harmless entertainment. However, other people think that it encourage violent behaviour. In my opinion, I believe that television violence can affect some people, but most people watch it only for entertainment.

On the one hand, there are some reasons why people think television violence is harmless. Many people watch television in their free time for enjoy and relaxation. They watch action movies because the stories are interesting and exciting. The violence in these movies are usually not real, so people know that they are only acting. For example, many children watch Marvel movies where there are many fighting scenes. They enjoy the characters and stories, but they do not always copy them in real life. Therefore, fictional violence can be a way of entertainment for many people.

On the other hand, some people believe that television violence can have bad effects. One main reason is it can affect children because they can easily copy what they see. Some children may think that doing violence is normal if they see it many times on television. This can make them more aggressive in real life. For example, Crime Patrol is a programme which is made for create awareness about crime. But some people can use the information from this show in a bad way and learn how criminals do crimes. So, this type of programme can sometimes create negative effects.

In conclusion, there are good points in both views. Although television violence can affect some people, especially children, I think most people watch it for entertainment and they understand that the violence is not real.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the distinction between fictional entertainment and the potential for imitation by children. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the point about 'Crime Patrol' is a good example, but it could be expanded further to explain the nuance of why some viewers might be negatively influenced while others are not. The position is consistent throughout, but the depth of analysis remains at a fairly general level, which prevents it from reaching the higher bands.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. The introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion follow a standard structure. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Therefore,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and better referencing to avoid simple sentence structures.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You use common terms like 'good points,' 'bad effects,' and 'interesting.' While these are accurate, they are quite basic. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'for enjoy and relaxation' (should be 'for enjoyment and relaxation') and 'made for create awareness' (should be 'made to create awareness'). To improve, try to incorporate more academic collocations and less common vocabulary related to the topic of media influence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For example, 'It is often argue' should be 'It is often argued,' and 'the violence in these movies are' should be 'the violence... is' (subject-verb agreement). Additionally, 'doing violence' is not a natural collocation; 'engaging in violent behavior' would be more appropriate. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to limit the score to a 6.0.
