Student answer (Band 6.5)
In today's world, television has become a popular source of entertainment. Some people think that such violence is a harmless form of entertainment, while others argue that it encourages violent behaviour. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own opinion.
On the one hand, fictional violence can be considered harmless entertainment for several reasons. Firstly, most viewers understand that the violence shown in films and television programmes is imaginary and is created for entertainment purposes. Therefore, they can distinguish between fictional events and real-life situations. For example, people may watch action movies in which the main character fight criminals without developing any intention to behave violently in their own lives. Consequently, it can be regarded as a normal form of entertainment when consumed in moderation.
On the other hand, some people believe that repeated exposure to voilent content can encourage aggressive behaviour. To elaborate on this, children and teenagers may be particularly influenced because they may not enough mature to understand difference between fiction and real-life behaviour. In addition, if children frequently watch their favourite charaters always solve problems through fighting or physical aggression, they may gradually consider such behaviour acceptable. a child who regularly watches violent programmes may imitate the actions of a favourite character when dealing with conflicts at school. As a result, it may pester their parents and they always worried about their child.
To conclude, I think that fictional violence is not necessarily harmful when people watch it occasinally and understand that it is fictional. However, excessive exposure, particularly among young people, can have negative consequences because it may influence their attitudes towards aggression. Parents should therefore monitor the content watched by children.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, such as the distinction between fiction and reality and the potential impact on children's development. However, the development of the second viewpoint could be more sophisticated; for instance, the final sentence of the second paragraph regarding parents being 'worried' is slightly vague and does not fully extend the argument about the long-term societal impact of violent media. Overall, the response is balanced and maintains a consistent position throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Consequently', and 'In addition' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions are slightly mechanical. The referencing is mostly clear, though the connection between the final sentence of the second paragraph and the preceding argument is a bit abrupt. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'fictional violence', 'aggressive behaviour', and 'moderate'. However, there are some minor spelling errors ('voilent', 'charaters', 'occasinally') and minor word choice issues, such as 'pester their parents', which is slightly informal for an academic essay. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more precise collocations and ensure consistent accuracy in spelling, as these errors occasionally draw attention to the language rather than the content.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several instances of accurate complex sentences, such as 'if children frequently watch their favourite characters always solve problems... they may gradually consider such behaviour acceptable.' However, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as 'not enough mature' (should be 'not mature enough') and 'the difference' (missing article). Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error with the lowercase 'a' at the start of the sentence 'a child who...'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading of basic grammatical structures.
