Student answer (Band 5.5)

There has been a considerable debate over whether fictional violence portrayed on television is harmless entertainment. Although it is more entertaining, it encourages violent behaviour. This essay will discuss both views before presenting my own opinion.

Some people argue that fictional violence portrayed on television does not necessarily encourage aggressive behaviour. People find these type of movies more entertaining particularly young people. Therefore, they seem this genre as the harmless entertainment. Supporters argue that in the era of digital advancement, people are well aware that these are just fictions and has no reality. As a result, young generation usually watch it for entertainment and enjoyment.

While others argue that these violent movies encourage violent and savage behaviour particularly among young people. Watching these movies affects their mindset which is not good for their mental well-being. If children watch these movies, they might adopt these behaviours since they are immature. Take pubg as an example, it is an online game for adolescents based on violence and threats and there were a number of suicide cases recorded in pubg players.

In my perspective, although these kinds of movies are entertaining, it affects mindset in the long run. People watching these type of movies are more likely to become aggressive, fierce, and violent over time. Therefore, people especially young generation should be restricted from watching these type of movies. Additionally, government should take action on production of these type of movies.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The essay addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the response is under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of development. While the ideas are relevant, the supporting arguments, particularly the example of 'pubg', are somewhat brief and could have been expanded to better illustrate the link between fictional violence and real-world behaviour. The position is consistent throughout, but the lack of length prevents a more thorough exploration of the topic, resulting in a slightly underdeveloped response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. There is a logical progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Although', 'Therefore', and 'While others argue', which help connect sentences. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive (e.g., 'these type of movies' is used frequently). Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall flow and coherence of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific language like 'aggressive behaviour', 'mental well-being', and 'digital advancement'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is noticeable repetition of phrases like 'these type of movies' and 'young people'. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more varied synonyms and more precise collocations to avoid repetitive phrasing and demonstrate a wider lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'these are just fictions and has no reality' should be 'have no reality') and incorrect pluralisation (e.g., 'these type of movies' should be 'these types of movies'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the frequency of these minor errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring greater accuracy would improve the score.
