Student answer (Band 6.5)

Opinions differ regarding the impact of the fictional violence portrayed on television. While some individuals think that it is an harmless entertainment, I largely believe that it can encourage a violent behavior. Examining both perspectives provide a clearer understanding of the matter.

The depiction of violent behavior in the media can be a good source of entertainment especially to individuals who have interest in such kinds of media. For example, while other types of entertainment such as the cartoons can be boring to adults, violent content is entertaining especially to people who like action movies and it has nothing to do with the behavior change.

Nevertheless, it would be unrealistic to overlook the fact that the information absorbed daily can influence a persons character by increasing aggression. Essentially, Young viewers may imitate the behavior of fictional characters, particularly when those characters are portrayed as powerful or successful. For instance, if a child who does not understand English watches a cartoon animation displayed in English, they may internalize the aggressive behavior by imitating.

Furthermore, excessive exposure to fictional violence may reduce empathy and make individuals less sensitive to the suffering of others. For example, researchers have found an association between the behavior of several criminals and their interest in fictional violent movies online, which clearly illustrates the relationship between the reality and information absorbed by human brain.

To conclude, although the exposure to violent movies can be entertaining, I strongly believe that it can encourage violent behaviors by reducing empathy and increasing the aggression among the viewers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal position. The ideas are relevant, particularly the discussion on empathy and imitation. However, the development of the first perspective (that violence is harmless) is somewhat weak and lacks depth, relying on a brief mention of 'action movies'. The second perspective is better supported with examples. To reach a higher band, ensure that both sides of the argument are explored with equal depth and that the personal opinion is integrated more seamlessly into the body paragraphs rather than just the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Nevertheless', 'Essentially', and 'Furthermore' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the third paragraph ('the behavior of several criminals') is a bit vague. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints, which helps the overall flow. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the link between the cartoon example and the broader argument about aggression could be more explicitly stated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common items like 'internalize', 'excessive exposure', and 'empathy'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'an harmless entertainment' (should be 'harmless entertainment') and 'a violent behavior' (should be 'violent behavior'). While the range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. The student uses basic vocabulary for the most part, and the collocation 'information absorbed by human brain' is slightly unnatural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including article misuse ('an harmless'), subject-verb agreement issues ('Examining both perspectives provide'), and minor punctuation errors. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The sentence structure is generally functional, but there is a lack of variety in complex grammatical forms. Improving control over articles and ensuring subject-verb agreement would significantly enhance the accuracy of the writing.
