Student answer (Band 6.5)

Opinions differ regarding the impact of the fictional violence portrayed on television. While some individuals think that it is harmless entertainment, I largely believe that it can encourage violent behavior. Examining both perspectives provides a clearer understanding of the matter.

The depiction of violent behavior in the media can be a good source of entertainment especially to individuals who have interest in real action movies. For example, while other types of entertainment such as cartoons can be boring to adults, fictional violence is entertaining especially to people who like crazy content. Consequently, becomes the best source of entertainment to them.

Nevertheless, it would be unrealistic to overlook the fact that the information absorbed regularly can influence a person's character by increasing aggression. Essentially, young viewers may imitate the behavior of fictional characters particularly when those characters are portrayed as powerful or successful. For instance, if a child who does not understand English watches a cartoon animation displayed in English, they may internalize aggressive behavior and imitate the characters in the movie.

Furthermore, excessive exposure to fictional violence may reduce empathy and make individuals less sensitive to the suffering of others. For example, researchers have found an association between the behavior of several criminals and their interest in fictional violent movies online, which clearly illustrates the relationship between the reality and information absorbed by the human brain.

To conclude, although the exposure to violent movies can be entertaining, I strongly believe that it can encourage violent behavior by reducing empathy and increasing aggression among the viewers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, particularly the distinction between entertainment value and the potential for desensitization or imitation. However, the development of the first body paragraph is somewhat thin; the argument that fictional violence is 'entertaining' because it is 'crazy content' lacks depth and specific examples. To reach a higher band, ensure that both sides of the argument are explored with equal analytical rigor. Your position remains consistent throughout the essay, which is a strength.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Nevertheless', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude' to transition between ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. However, some sentences feel slightly disjointed, such as 'Consequently, becomes the best source of entertainment to them,' which lacks a clear subject. Improving the flow between sentences within paragraphs would enhance the overall coherence. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'internalize', 'desensitization' (implied), and 'aggression'. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'crazy content' and 'information absorbed', which could be more academic. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the word choice is occasionally imprecise. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and academic register to elevate the tone of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is consistently clear. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as the missing subject in 'Consequently, becomes the best source...' and the slightly awkward phrasing in '...relationship between the reality and information absorbed'. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally good. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional clauses or passive voice, with greater accuracy.
