Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is undeniable that, the debate surrounding the impact of fictional violence portrayed on television has sparked considerable controversy. While some individuals argue that this type of violence constitutes harmless entertainment, others contend that it fosters aggressive behavior. After evaluating both perspectives, I cautiously align myself with those who advocate that fictional violence can serve as a form of entertainment without significant adverse consequences. This essay will outline not only both perspectives but also my opinion which is in favor of former point of view in forthcoming fragments with relevant conclusion.
To commence with, firstly, in contemporary society, television programs occupy a pivotal role in our everyday existence. Many viewers are drawn to content that encompasses fictional narratives, often intertwined with themes of crime and violence. To elaborate, programming provides an escape for individuals seeking leisure after a long day, allowing them to unwind and immerse themselves in imaginative scenarios. Secondly, the television industry is fundamentally motivated by profitability, leading creators to prioritize content that captivates the audience while serving their entertainment needs.
Nevertheless, its intention to amuse, there are indeed several potential negative repercussions associated with the portrayal of violence on television. For individuals predisposed to criminal behavior, such depictions may serve as a blueprint for illicit activities. Furthermore, some viewers, particularly younger audiences, may subconsciously emulate the conflict resolution strategies depicted in these shows, leading to a skewed understanding of real-life consequences. Studies have illustrated that children exposed to violent media often display increased aggression and desensitization to real-world violence, raising concerns about their future behavior and moral development.
To conclude, with comparing both viewpoints, it is essential to acknowledge the complex nature of this issue. While fictional violence can act as a harmless form of escapism for many, it is crucial not to overlook its potential to influence impressionable audiences. In my opinion, a balanced approach is warranted. While adults may differentiate between fiction and reality, younger viewers may lack the cognitive skills necessary to do so. Therefore, parental guidance and critical engagement with media content can help mitigate any adverse effects associated with violent portrayals. Ultimately, the responsibility lies not only with content creators but also with parents and society as a whole to ensure that media consumption is thoughtful and discerning.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout, although there is a slight contradiction between the introduction, where you state you favor the 'harmless' view, and the conclusion, where you advocate for a 'balanced approach' and parental guidance. The ideas are generally well-developed, particularly in the third paragraph regarding the impact on younger audiences. To reach a higher band, ensure your stated position in the introduction is fully aligned with the nuanced conclusion provided at the end.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different viewpoints. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'To commence with,' 'Nevertheless,' and 'Furthermore.' However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or redundant, such as 'In forthcoming fragments with relevant conclusion' in the introduction, which is unnecessary and slightly unnatural. The referencing is generally clear, and the flow between paragraphs is smooth, contributing to a coherent overall structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'pivotal role,' 'desensitization,' 'mitigate,' and 'discerning.' This shows an ability to use less common lexical items with some awareness of style. There are occasional minor inaccuracies, such as 'in favor of former point of view,' which lacks an article, and 'with comparing both viewpoints,' which is slightly awkward phrasing. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey precise meanings and supports the development of your arguments well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use complex sentences effectively, such as 'While fictional violence can act as a harmless form of escapism for many, it is crucial not to overlook its potential to influence impressionable audiences.' There are some minor punctuation and grammatical errors, such as the unnecessary comma after 'undeniable that,' and the missing space after the period in the final paragraph ('reality, younger'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication.
