Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is undeniable that adoption of modern technology for entertainment purpose may sometimes badly influence people's behavior. In this regard, some people believe that the fictional violence portrayed on television is harmless entertainment while others disagree and think that it encourages violent behavior. This essay will not only outline both prospective but also my opinion in favor of latter point of view in forthcoming fragments with a logical conclusion.

To commence with, there are several reasons in view of fictional violence portrayed on television is harmless entertainment. The prime one is that, in contemporary society, television programs occupy a pivotal role in our everyday existence. Many viewers are drawn to content that encompasses fictional narratives, often intertwined with themes of crime and violence. To elaborate it, programming provides an escape for individuals seeking leisure after a long day, allowing them to unwind and immerse themselves in imaginative scenarios. Secondly, the television industry is fundamentally motivated by profitability, leading creators to prioritize content that captivates the audience while serving their entertainment needs.

Nevertheless, fictional shows and movies encourages violent behavior specially among young children. First and foremost reason is that, for individuals predisposed to criminal behavior, such depictions may serve as a blueprint for illicit activities. Furthermore, some viewers, particularly younger audiences, may subconsciously emulate the conflict resolution strategies depicted in these shows, leading to a skewed understanding of real-life consequences. Studies have illustrated that children exposed to violent media often display increased aggression and desensitization to real-world violence, raising concerns about their future behavior and moral development.

To conclude, with comparing both viewpoints, it is essential to acknowledge the complex nature of this issue. While fictional violence can act as a harmless form of escapism for many, it is crucial not to overlook its potential to influence impressionable audiences. In my opinion, a balanced approach is warranted..While adults may differentiate between fiction and reality, younger viewers may lack the cognitive skills necessary to do so. Therefore, parental guidance and critical engagement with media content can help mitigate any adverse effects associated with violent portrayals. Ultimately, the responsibility lies not only with content creators but also with parents and society as a whole to ensure that media consumption is thoughtful and discerning

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly identify both viewpoints and provide a personal opinion, which is maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly in the third paragraph regarding the impact on children. However, the development of the first viewpoint (that violence is harmless) is slightly less nuanced than the second. To improve, ensure that the arguments for both sides are balanced in terms of depth and analytical quality. Overall, the position is clear and the response is well-structured to meet the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the transition between paragraphs is generally smooth. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Nevertheless', and 'Furthermore' effectively. However, there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the slightly awkward phrasing in the introduction ('in favor of latter point of view in forthcoming fragments'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different arguments, which helps the reader follow your line of reasoning easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'pivotal role', 'predisposed to criminal behavior', and 'desensitization' show a good command of topic-specific language. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'prospective' instead of 'perspectives' and 'in favor of latter' (missing 'the'). While the vocabulary is adequate and allows for clear communication, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions would help elevate the score further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show good control over complex sentences, such as the conditional structure in the conclusion. However, there are several grammatical slips, including subject-verb agreement errors ('fictional shows and movies encourages') and minor punctuation issues (the double period after 'warranted..'). These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on proofreading for small errors like articles and verb endings will improve your accuracy.
