Student answer (Band 7.0)

Some people believe that fictional violence shown on television is simply a form of harmless entertainment, while others argue that it can encourage people to behave violently. Although watching violent programmes does not necessarily make everyone aggressive, I believe that repeated exposure to violence can have a negative influence, particularly on young people.

On the one hand, fictional violence can be considered harmless entertainment. Many people watch action films, crime dramas and superhero movies because they enjoy excitement and suspense. Viewers generally understand that these programmes are fictional and that the events shown on screen are not real. Furthermore, watching violent content does not automatically cause people to become violent. Most viewers can distinguish between entertainment and real-life behaviour. For example, someone may enjoy an action movie involving fights and explosions without having any desire to hurt another person.

On the other hand, there are concerns that frequent exposure to violent television can encourage aggressive behaviour. When violence is repeatedly presented as an effective way to solve problems, viewers may gradually become less sensitive to its consequences. This can be particularly concerning for children, who may not have enough maturity to understand the difference between fictional behaviour and appropriate behaviour in real life. For instance, children who regularly watch characters using violence to gain respect or solve conflicts may copy such actions when dealing with their friends.

In my opinion, television violence should not be completely blamed for aggressive behaviour, as many other factors, such as family environment and social circumstances, also influence people's behaviour. However, excessive exposure to violent content can still have harmful effects, especially on children. Therefore, parents should monitor what young people watch and encourage them to choose suitable programmes.

conclusion, although fictional violence can be harmless entertainment for many adults, excessive exposure may encourage aggressive attitudes, particularly among children. Therefore, violent content should be viewed responsibly

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between adult perception and the potential impact on children. To reach a higher band, you could further extend your arguments by providing more specific examples or exploring the 'why' behind the psychological impact of violence, rather than relying on general statements. Overall, the response is well-structured and directly answers the question asked.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the transition between the two viewpoints is smooth. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In my opinion' effectively. However, the final paragraph is missing a transition word at the beginning (e.g., 'In conclusion'), which makes the start of the paragraph feel abrupt. Aside from this minor mechanical issue, the paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'repeated exposure', 'distinguish between', and 'social circumstances' are used accurately. You attempt to use some less common vocabulary, though the range could be broader to reach the highest bands. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede meaning. To improve, try incorporating more sophisticated synonyms or idiomatic expressions related to the topic of media influence and psychological development.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

Your grammar is generally strong, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use conditional structures and subordinate clauses effectively, such as 'When violence is repeatedly presented... viewers may gradually become less sensitive'. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is accurate. There are no major grammatical slips that cause confusion. To move toward a higher band, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex grammatical forms, such as passive voice constructions or inversion, to add more sophistication to your writing style.
