IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think that the fictional violence portrayed on television is harmless entertainment. Others disagree and think that it encourages violent behaviour.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Some people believe that fictional violence shown on television is simply a form of entertainment and has no serious impact on viewers. Others argue that such content can encourage aggressive or violent behaviour. While fictional programmes are primarily created for entertainment, I believe that excessive exposure to violence can negatively influence some viewers, particularly children and young people.

On the one hand, fictional violence does not necessarily lead to violent behaviour. Most adults are able to distinguish between fictional content and real life, and they generally watch violent films or television programmes purely for entertainment. For example, action films often contain fighting, crime and other forms of violence, but millions of people watch them without becoming aggressive in their daily lives. Furthermore, violent scenes are sometimes necessary for telling certain types of stories, such as crime dramas or historical programmes. Therefore, it would be unreasonable to assume that everyone who watches fictional violence will behave violently.

On the other hand, repeated exposure to violent content may have a negative influence on certain viewers. Children, in particular, may not fully understand the difference between acceptable behaviour on television and appropriate behaviour in real life. If they frequently see characters solving problems through violence, they may begin to consider aggressive behaviour normal or acceptable. In addition, some young people may imitate characters whom they admire. For this reason, I believe parents and broadcasters should take measures to limit children's exposure to inappropriate violent content, for example through age ratings and parental controls.

In conclusion, although fictional violence can be harmless entertainment for many people, it may negatively affect some viewers, especially children. In my view, violent content does not need to be completely avoided, but appropriate restrictions should be used to protect younger audiences.
