Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the view that fictional violence is harmless entertainment and the view that it encourages violent behaviour, while also providing a personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the argument regarding the lack of real-life harm in the second paragraph simply reiterates that shows are fictional without providing deep extension. Similarly, the points about crime in the third paragraph rely on general assertions rather than well-developed examples. Although a clear position is maintained throughout, the ideas would benefit from greater elaboration and more specific supporting evidence to achieve a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph-by-paragraph structure that follows the typical essay format. Cohesive devices such as 'On one hand,' 'On the other hand,' 'Moreover,' and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the arguments. However, paragraphing and referencing occasionally suffer from awkward transitions and mechanical usage. For example, the final sentence of the third paragraph is a fragment ('Considerably increase the crime ratio in the society.') that lacks a clear subject and disrupts the logical flow. Additionally, some pronoun referencing, such as 'these type of shows' and 'these kind of videos', is repetitive and detracts from the overall flow of cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their main ideas about television violence and societal impact. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'hostility', 'agression', and 'techniques', but these are undermined by frequent spelling and word-choice errors, including 'enertainment', 'majority of public', 'realte', 'agressive', and 'conculsion'. Furthermore, there is heavy reliance on repetitive phrases like 'these kind of shows' and 'watching these kind of'. While meaning is generally conveyed despite these lexical shortcomings, the persistent inaccuracies prevent the response from reaching a higher band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'While other argue, that these type of shows encourages violent behaviour.' and 'For example, After watching action movies and shows, people will learn new techniques and methods of violence.' However, grammatical control is weak throughout the response, featuring frequent errors in punctuation, subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'these type of shows encourages'), and sentence fragments (e.g., 'Considerably increase the crime ratio in the society.'). There are also awkward structural choices, such as 'Making these kind of portrayed will foster...'. These frequent errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited command of complex grammatical structures.
