Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that fictional violence is harmless entertainment and that it encourages aggressive behavior—and provides a personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the argument about stress relief is mentioned multiple times without being significantly extended or varied. While the position is clear throughout, the reasoning tends to generalise rather than fully elaborate with deep examples. These characteristics place the response firmly in Band 6, as it addresses all parts of the task with relevant ideas, though some parts are under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into discernible paragraphs, following a logical introduction, body paragraphs for each view, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. The student attempts to use transition markers like 'In modern era', 'To explain', and 'On the other hands', but these are sometimes awkward or inaccurate. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as pronoun use referring back to abstract concepts. Paragraphing is present, but overall progression can feel disjointed due to choppy sentences and mechanical linking. This fits the Band 5 descriptors, where there is some organization and paragraphing, but cohesive devices are inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, resulting in a lack of clear overall progression.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'aggressive behaviour', 'cosmic battles', and 'consequences'. However, there are frequent spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'srounded' instead of 'surrounded', 'peopel' instead of 'people', 'destracted' instead of 'distracted', 'secript friction' instead of scripted fiction, and 'cartioons' instead of cartoons. While these errors are noticeable and detract from the quality of the writing, they do not entirely impede communication as the reader can still grasp the intended meaning. This performance corresponds to Band 5, which features a limited but minimally adequate range with noticeable errors that may cause some difficulty for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some capability to construct multi-clause sentences. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with a high frequency of errors across the text. Examples include run-on sentences and punctuation issues, missing articles ('television plays an vital role in humans life'), subject-verb agreement issues ('it have negative consequences'), and incorrect verb forms ('when television hero used violence than they also copy'). Because the errors are frequent and pervasive, they often cause difficulty for the reader and prevent the structures from being controlled. This aligns with Band 5, featuring a limited range of structures and frequent errors in grammar.
