IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think that the fictional violence portrayed on television is harmless entertainment. Others disagree and think that it encourages violent behaviour.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many believe media violence is not dangerous because most viewers can tell the difference between fiction and real life. Watching an action movie helps people relax and blow off steam in a safe way. Millions of people watch violent shows every day without ever committing a crime or hurting anyone.

View 2: It causes real violence

On the other hand, others argue that watching too much violence makes people used to it. Children in particular learn by copying what they see. If they watch characters solve problems by fighting, they might start doing the same thing in real life when they get angry.

My Opinion

I believe adults can watch violent shows safely without any issues. However, it can be dangerous for young kids who are still learning how to manage their behavior. Therefore, screen violence is not completely harmless unless parents monitor what their children watch.

Conclusion

In short, while television violence is good entertainment for responsible adults, it can encourage bad habits in children. Age limits and parental guidance are needed to keep everyone safe.
