Student answer (Band 6.0)

The fictional violence performed on the television is just for entertainment purpose but it influences some of the young audience’s mind.

The television has a huge impact on audience. It starts new trends, changes people’s way of thinking and can motivate their audience. The entertainment industry has always worked hard to provide entertainment to the people. There is a specific group of audience who enjoys action filled movies. So, the action movies are targeted for such audiences but, the entertainment industry never encourages fights.

Young minds get influenced easily. They get inspired by their favourite actors. Some of them aspire to become like their favourite action hero. It is difficult for them to differenciate between harmful and harmless action. They just want to imitate the fight scences portrayed on the television. Hence, This causes violence either at their home or at their school. They unknowingly cause harm to the people around them. Some kids assume that they will look cool if they portray themselves as dangerous and violent.

In my opinion, yes the fictional violence portrayed on the television does encourage violence.

When my brother and I were kids, we would watch television together. My brother loved watching wrestling matches WWE. He would imitate the actions from the fight and practice it on the pillow. One time he practiced his move on me and got me hurt. To be honest, i was not hurt so much to throw a huge tantrum but i did and got him in trouble.

The action scences shown on the television should have an age limit or a warning.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on fictional television violence and providing a clear personal opinion. The writer establishes an initial position and supports the arguments with logical reasoning, such as the idea that young people lack maturity and easily imitate what they see on screen. Furthermore, the use of a relevant personal example regarding wrestling matches and a younger brother adds support to the main arguments. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed and lack extension. For instance, the point that the entertainment industry does not intentionally encourage fights is introduced but not thoroughly explored. Overall, the prompt is adequately addressed, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas from the introduction, through the body paragraphs discussing different viewpoints, to the conclusion and final thoughts. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct stages of the argument, such as the general impact on audiences, the susceptibility of young minds, and the personal anecdote. However, cohesive devices are at times basic or mechanically handled, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the abrupt transition into the personal anecdote. Additionally, some paragraphs are very short and could be better integrated to improve the overall flow of the text. This performance sits comfortably within Band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate ideas clearly. Words and phrases such as 'entertainment industry,' 'targeted,' and 'aspire to become' demonstrate a sufficient range. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'differenciate' instead of 'differentiate' and 'scences' instead of 'scenes.' The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but occasional inaccuracies in collocation and spelling limit the score to a solid Band 6. The language is functional and successfully conveys the writer's meaning without impeding comprehension.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable command of grammar. Sentences like 'Young minds get influenced easily' and 'They get inspired by their favourite actors' show basic control, while attempts at complex structures are generally understandable, as seen in 'It is difficult for them to differenciate between harmful and harmless action.' However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'The fictional violence performed on the television' (preposition misuse) and 'i was not hurt so much to throw a huge tantrum' (informal and ungrammatical structure). Punctuation is mostly acceptable, but these persistent errors place the writing firmly in the Band 6 category.
