Student answer (Band 5.5)

There is an ongoing debate about whether fictional violence portrays on television is harmless entertainment while others disagree and think that it encourage violence behaviour. This essay will examine both sides of the argument before giving my own perspective.

On the one hand, some people believe that fictional violence portrayed on television is harmless entertainment. One of the main reasons for that is most viewers understands the difference between entertainment and reality and can watch such programmes without becoming aggressive. For instance, action films and television dramas often use violence simply to create excitement or develop the storyline. As a result, the impact of fictional violence may depend on the individual viewers and context in which it is presented.

On the other hand, some people believe that fictional violence on television can have a negative influence on viewers, especially young people. Regular exposure to violent scenes may make aggression behaviour. Therefore, supporters of this view argue that violence content should be controlled more over watching these violent content can effect young people and can make people more aggressive and mentally unstable.

In conclusion although both side now have merits I firmly believe that films and television shows have fictional violence that portrayed on television. Further more it can particularly affect young people. In my opinion, the impact largely depends on the viewer and the type of content being watched. I firmly believe that second view is more convincing, as repeated exposure to violence content can negatively influence viewer, particularly young people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on fictional television violence and presenting a clear position. In the introduction, the writer outlines the two perspectives and signals their own opinion. The body paragraphs examine both sides adequately, using supporting reasons such as viewers understanding the difference between entertainment and reality versus the negative influence on young people. However, the development of ideas in the conclusion becomes repetitive and slightly contradictory, as the final sentences re-state the author's position multiple times without introducing fresh extension. Despite these minor structural overlaps in the conclusion, all core prompt requirements are met satisfactorily. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors because it addresses all parts of the task and presents a relevant position, although some ideas are slightly under-developed or repetitive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a generally coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, dividing the introduction, two body paragraphs, and conclusion logically. The writer attempts to guide the reader using standard cohesive devices such as On the one hand and On the other hand. However, referencing and cohesion become faulty in the conclusion, where phrases like although both side now have merits I firmly believe that films and television shows have fictional violence that portrayed on television are grammatically tangled and disrupt the logical flow. Additionally, pronoun referencing in the final paragraph is confusing, leading to a mechanical and repetitive progression of ideas. Because the overall structure is evident but cohesion in the final section is flawed and repetitive, a Band 6 score is most appropriate.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as ongoing debate, aggressive, and regular exposure. However, there are several noticeable word-choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as violence behaviour instead of violent behaviour, violence content instead of violent content, and effect instead of affect. Furthermore, awkward phrasing such as fictional violence that portrayed on television demonstrates limited control over less common lexical items. Spelling is generally accurate, but inaccuracies in word formation and collocation prevent the response from achieving a higher band. These characteristics correspond closely to the Band 6 descriptor, which notes an adequate range with some inaccuracy in word choice and occasional errors that do not completely impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures such as when it is presented and as repeated exposure to violence content can negatively influence viewer. However, the essay contains frequent grammatical errors and awkward structural slips, particularly in the opening and closing sections. Examples include whether fictional violence portrays on television instead of is portrayed, most viewers understands with a subject-verb agreement error, and make aggression behaviour. The conclusion contains severe grammatical breakdowns, such as films and television shows have fictional violence that portrayed on television, which obscure the intended meaning. Because errors in grammar and punctuation are frequent and occasionally impede communication, this falls into the Band 5 category.
