Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the recent years, fictional violence is being increasingly portrayed on television(TV) to build up tension in the audience which increases the channel views. While some people regard this as harmless entertainment, others argue that it promotes harmful behaviour in some individuals. In my view, although fictional violence is used for entertainment purposes, it instills a negative impact on the public to some extent.

On the one hand, some TV shows and movies include some fake scenarios on screen portraying violence between the roles to convey that a character is powerful than the other. For examples, some films include fighting scenes between people to indicate the dominance of a leading role. Some people enjoy these violence as a part of the show. Moverover, the television channels promote fictional violence in some reality shows attracting the viewers by building up tension in the audience. So, majority of people see it just as a mode of entertainment making it generally harmeless.

On the other hand, some people are vulnerable to the violent content they see on the television. Furthermore, they tend to apply these fictional scenarios in the real life. Many youngsters for instance, try to enact the things they watch over the television and engage in violent behaviour which is very hamful to the public and the society and can sometimes cost a life of an individual. Also, watching harmful content instills new ideas in them and motivates them towards aggressive behaviour and also shows a negative impact on their mental health.

In conclusion, while fictional violence that is being showed in television is generally harmless and entertaining, it shows some detrimental effects on vulnerable people in the society like children and teenagers who naturally tend to be impulsive.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task prompt. It discusses the view that fictional violence is harmless entertainment, examines the counter-perspective that it encourages violent behaviour, and clearly presents the writer's own opinion in both the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are extended and supported, such as when the student explains how youngsters enact scenarios they watch on television and the potential consequences for society. While some arguments could be further developed with deeper analysis, the task is fully addressed with a clear and consistent position throughout, meeting the criteria for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is divided into distinct paragraphs with a logical flow: an introduction with a clear thesis, separate body paragraphs discussing each opposing viewpoint, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately to guide the reader. However, some referencing is slightly mechanical and paragraphing could be managed more flexibly. Cohesion within paragraphs is generally sound, supporting an overall Band 6.5 or 7.0 score. We award a Band 6.5 due to occasional mechanical transitions and referencing issues.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'detrimental effects', 'impulsive', 'vulnerable', and 'aggravate'. There are, however, some noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'instills a negative impact' (instead of 'has a negative impact') and spelling errors like 'hamful' instead of harmful. Despite these flaws, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, aligning well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar with complex structures such as concessive clauses ('While some people regard this...'). However, there are frequent minor errors in grammar and punctuation, including articles ('In the recent years'), subject-verb agreement ('shows some detrimental effects... that is being showed'), and preposition use. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they persist frequently enough to prevent the response from reaching Band 7.0, making Band 6.0 the most accurate descriptor.
