Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people think that fictional violence shown on television is a harmless entertainment. However, other people disagree and believe that it encourage violent behaviour. This essay will discuss both of these views and give my own opinion.

On one hand, there are many people who thinks that violence in television is only for entertainment. Nowadays, action movies and series are very popular because they contains exciting fighting scenes and interesting stories. People watch these programs when they want to relax and enjoy their free time. Most of the viewers also knows that the violence is not real and it is performed by actors. For example, when someone watches a superhero movie, they understand that the fighting scenes are part of the story and they does not usually copy them in real life.

On the other hand, some people believe that television violence can affects the behaviour of viewers, especially children. Young children may not understand properly what is real and what is fictional. If they watches violent programs regularly, they could start thinking that violent behaviour is normal. Moreover, seeing too much violence can makes people less sensitive about it. For example, some children may try to copy actions which they have saw in movies or television programs.

In my opinion, fictional violence is not completely harmful because it is mainly made for entertainment. However, watching too much violent content can have negative effects, particularly on young people. Parents should therefore be more careful about what their children watches on television.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that television violence is harmless entertainment and that it encourages violent behaviour—and clearly presents the author's own opinion. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as action movies and the influence of television on children. While some points tend to generalize slightly, the task is fully covered, fulfilling the criteria for Band 6.5 to Band 7.0. Given the solid coverage of both perspectives and a clear conclusion, a band score of 6.5 is appropriate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organization. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, starting with a clear introduction, moving to the two contrasting views in body paragraphs, and concluding with a balanced final opinion. Cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover' are used effectively to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately throughout the response. Although referencing is occasionally repetitive, the logical structure easily meets the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, such as 'fictional violence', 'entertainment', 'behaviour', and 'superhero movie'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though lexical choices are occasionally basic or repetitive. A few word choice and grammatical-lexical errors occur, such as treating 'entertainment' as a countable noun ('a harmless entertainment') and errors in verb agreement. Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly, aligning with the Band 6.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating an ability to form subordinate clauses using 'because', 'when', and 'if'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'other people disagree and believe that it encourage', 'there are many people who thinks', 'viewers also knows', 'television violence can affects', 'if they watches', 'television watches'). These errors do not seriously impede communication, but their frequency prevents the essay from reaching a higher band, placing it firmly at Band 5.5.
