Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times there has been an increase in popularity of television, especially the action and fighting sequences. Many people think that the scenes portrayed are harmless entertainment. Whereas, some argue that it tends to influence people to practice such kind of behaviour. I partly agree to this view and believe that though it is made for entertainment purpose it can have a significant effect on people watching it.

On one hand, people must understand that such kind of content is solely for entertainment purpose and should not be replicated in real life. These kind of scenes are an important part of the television and are performed under expert supervision. For example, shows like Khatron ke Khiladi have gained major popularity over the past few years, this is due to the kind of stunts performed in it.

However, it is the responsibility of makers and artists to ensure that the audience are not influenced by these scenes. Thus, it should be conveyed to the audience that whatever is been shown is a part of acting and they should not be encouraged by it. Infact, nowadays many movies and shows have started adding warnings like "This act is performed under expert supervision and should not be implemented by viewers". Showing behind the scenes would also help audience understand it.

Thus, I believe that though fictional violence portrayed in television is harmless and for the sake of entertainment it is necessary to ensure that certain regulations are put in place to avoid the negative influence it can have on audience.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on fictional television violence and providing a clear personal opinion. The writer establishes a position in the introduction stating that 'I partly agree to this view' and maintains this stance throughout. Main ideas are presented, such as the distinction between reality and entertainment, and the responsibility of creators. However, the support and examples provided tend to be slightly limited and lack full development. For instance, the mention of stunts in shows like 'Khatron ke Khiladi' touches upon the prompt, but it drifts slightly toward reality television and stunt shows rather than scripted fictional violence. Consequently, the ideas remain somewhat general and would benefit from deeper elaboration to reach a higher band level. Overall, the task is adequately fulfilled.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different viewpoints, with clear opening signposts such as 'On one hand' and 'However'. Cohesive devices are generally deployed effectively, though there are minor instances where referencing or transitions feel slightly mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'Thus' to open sentences and paragraphs. Paragraph two also contains a run-on sentence structure ('...past few years, this is due to...') which weakens cohesive flow. Nevertheless, the relationships between ideas are generally clear and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating a sufficient range to discuss the topic of television violence. The writer attempts some less common lexical items and collocations, such as 'fictional violence', 'expert supervision', and 'negative influence'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing. For example, writing 'practice such kind of behaviour' is unnatural, and 'These kind of scenes' contains a grammatical agreement error in vocabulary. Additionally, phrasing like 'whatever is been shown' reflects awkward lexical and grammatical blending. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication, placing the response securely in the mid-range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as 'Many people think that the scenes portrayed are harmless entertainment.' However, there is a noticeable frequency of grammatical errors and awkward structures. Examples include agreement issues ('These kind of scenes', 'the audience are'), passive voice construction errors ('whatever is been shown'), and missing articles or prepositions. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while the errors occasionally distract, they rarely impede overall communication. The control over grammar is consistent with a band 6 level, where simple structures are handled well but complex structures introduce persistent errors.
