IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people think that the fictional violence portrayed on television is harmless entertainment. Others disagree and think that it encourages violent behaviour.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is widely debated that the fictional violence showed on television is harmless entertainment or not. Some people believe argue that picturing violent scenes on TV could cause a negative effect on the society, while others believe that it has nothing to with the attitude of the public. This essay will discuss both perspectives and give my opinion.
Some individuals believe that allowing violent and fighting scenes to be telecast on the TV of general public is very much responsible for the violent responses among the people. One major reason is that viewers often compare their personal lives with the TV show characters and follow the same anger mindset. For example, a TV show called Breaking bad showed a scene of fight btween a teacher and a student and there were cases reported where students who committed brutal fight with their teachers saying that they were inspired by the TV show. As a result, it has a negative outcome on the menatlity of the common people.
On the other hand, many people think that watching a violent scene on the TV has nothing to do towards the attitudes of the viewers. One key reason is that most of the crimes reported in the areas where no TV or internet facility is available. For example, one news article wrote that majority of the violent crimes are reported in the rural areas of the USA where the access to televisions is not easily available. This point is enough to explain why television shows are not the culprit of violence in the society and can be a reasonable position.
In conclusion, some people believe that fictional violence portrayed on television is harmless entertainment, whilw others argue it encourages the violent behaviour. Both sides have valid arguments. However, I think TV shows filming fictional violent scenes are not encouraging the violent attitudes because majority of the violent crimes are reported in the areas where TV are unaccessible.
