IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people think that the fictional violence portrayed on television is harmless entertainment. Others disagree and think that it encourages violent behaviour.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Movies or cartoons with fictional theme is one of the most famous genres among most of the people of different generations. Fictional violence which are potrayed in the movies are sometimes harmless because they are not realistic and it is just an imagination. But in some cases, it can also have a negative impact, especially on the children as violence is never a good option in case of learning any lesson from that film or cartoon.
Fictional films are always a great choice among the generations as people like to imagine a lot. Those films with power, possession and magic are everyones' all time favourite. For instance, starting from Aladin and the magic lamp in the past to the avengers at present, these types of films having story of magic, power to bring anything one wishes and also having the power of fire,air or electricity which are used to save the world are really appreciated by lot of people. Those supernatural conflicts are enjoyed by the audience and sometimes some people even wish for having these types of power in themselves too.
On the other hand, these fictional violence which are shown in television has many types of disadvantages too. Especially in case of children, they are not that much mature enough to differentiate between the fiction and the reality. So, most of the time they believe that all these things are real and they also can do these things easily. For example, after watching a famous cartoon named 'Tom and Jerry', a child recently put herself in front of train thinking that it won't do any harm to her except making her flat just like the cartoon, which was a really dangerous attempt. Sometimes, these violence creates a negative impact in their life and they try to imply those things in their real life.
To sum up, Fictional stories are really enjoyable way to remove monotony and think out of the box in some cases.But violence in both real and fictional life is never a good option as it can causes harm in different way. So, people should enjoy those stories which doesn't portray any violence.
